BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball program has added an assistant coach, director of athletics Paul Krebs and head coach Curt Miller have announced. Kevin Eckert, an Ohio native, will begin his duties on Miller's staff on July 1.
"Kevin Eckert is a huge addition to our staff," said Miller. "He is extremely qualified for a third assistant, and gives us one of the most experienced groups of assistants in the Midwest."
Eckert is certainly no stranger to the Mid-American Conference or to the state of Ohio. A native of Berea, Ohio, he has spent six years on MAC coaching staffs.
Eckert comes to the Falcon program after spending four seasons on Cheryl Dozier's staff at the University at Buffalo. While with the Bulls, Eckert worked primarily with developing UB's post players, and also served as the staff's recruiting coordinator.
Eckert's tenure at UB coincided with the Bulls' first four seasons as a MAC member. The team posted a 61-51 overall record during that time, going 18-11 in 1999-2000 and 19-9 the following year. In that 2000-01 campaign, the Bulls went 10-6 in MAC play to tie for second in the East Division.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to be a part of the BG family," said Eckert. "Coach Miller has been a kind of mentor to me since I met him four years ago. To have the chance to work with him, along with such a great staff, is an opportunity that I am truly grateful for."
Prior to heading to UB, Eckert served as a graduate assistant for two seasons on the men's basketball staff at Ohio University. While with the Bobcats, Eckert's responsibilities included on-campus and phone recruiting, scouting, film exchange, summer camps, strength training and conditioning, on-the-floor teaching and player academics.
"One of Kevin's strengths is recruiting," said Miller. "He brings good contacts from the state of Michigan, and -- being an Ohio native -- he will also enhance our in-state recruiting efforts.
"We are excited to have Kevin join our staff, and we will look for immediate contributions both on and off the court."
While an undergraduate at Ohio, Eckert served as a varsity assistant and the junior varsity head coach for the boys' basketball teams at Federal Hocking High School. Both teams won the Tri-Valley Conference championship, and Eckert received an award for outstanding ethics and sportsmanship in coaching.
Eckert has also served as a coach and counselor at numerous summer basketball camps, including the Five-Star Basketball Camp.
A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Ohio, he received his bachelor's degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports science and coaching philosophy in 1996. He earned a master's degree in athletic administration in 1998.
