Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green State University and head coach Scott Paluch announced today its 2002-03 men's ice hockey schedule. The 36-game schedule includes 28 Central Collegiate Hockey Association contests, four tournament games and eight non-conference matchups overall. It will mark the inaugural season for Scott Paluch as head coach at his alma mater, BGSU.
Among the highlights of the 2002-03 schedule are appearances in the "Lefty" McFadden Invitational in Dayton, Ohio (Oct. 4-5), the Mariucci Classic, hosted by the University of Minnesota (Dec. 27-28), and a non-conference contest in historic Joe Louis Arena against Wayne State University (Jan. 21).
"I'm very excited about the schedule," said BGSU coach Scott Paluch. "When you combine our non-conference slate with our CCHA lineup, you have a very exciting schedule for 2002-2003.
"I feel the Lefty McFadden Invitational is a great way to kick-off the season," said Paluch. "Playing our geographical neighbor to the south (Findlay) is a great way to get fans excited about hockey in Northwest Ohio. Also, we will be playing in one of the premier tournaments in the country (Mariucci Classic), which has a tremendous field. And the opportunity to play at Joe Louis Arena gives us a chance to spread awareness about BGSU hockey."
At the first annual "Lefty" McFadden Invitational, the Falcons will square off against Niagara in the first round and then face either Air Force or Miami (Ohio) in the second round. The tournament is being played at the E.J. Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.
In December, BGSU will travel to the home arena of the 2002 National Champion Golden Gophers and take on Boston College in the first round. The second day will see the Falcons playing either Minnesota or Yale. The BGSU-BC matchup will pit Paluch against former Falcon coach and mentor, Jerry York.
The Falcons will then play at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich., against Wayne State University on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Paluch makes his head-coaching debut with the Falcons on Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the BGSU Ice Arena against the University of Windsor. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The first CCHA contest for BGSU will be at home against Western Michigan (Oct. 11).
Other notables visiting Bowling Green next season will be 2002 Frozen Four participant Michigan (Nov. 8-9), Michigan State (Nov. 22 & Feb. 8), Team USA-Under 17 (Nov. 15) and Findlay (Oct. 25). Also playing at the BGSU Ice Arena will be Western Michigan (Oct. 11 & Feb. 22), Alaska-Fairbanks (Jan. 3-4), Northern Michigan (Jan. 10-11), Notre Dame (Feb. 14-15) and Ferris State (March 7-8).
The first round of the CCHA Tournament will be at campus sites (March 14-15) followed by the finals at Joe Louis Arena (March 21-22).
