Falcons Top TTU, 41-7

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University football team scored the first 41 points of the game Thursday (Aug. 29) en route to a 41-7 win over Tennessee Tech University in the 2002 season opener for both teams. Some notes and numbers from the contest:

BGSU won the season opener for the second consecutive year, giving the Falcons consecutive 1-0 starts for the first time since winning the opener in 1990, 1991 and 1992.

The Falcons' 41 points in a half was the second most in school history ... the school record is 43, amassed against Toledo in a 1959 BGSU win.

The Brown and Orange has scored over 40 points in a game in three consecutive contests for the first time in school history ... BGSU scored 43 points at Northwestern and 56 vs. Toledo to end the 2001 campaign, before putting up 41 points vs. TTU.

Sophomore James Hawkins caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from Andy Sahm in the first quarter ... the TD grab was the first of Hawkins' career.

Sophomore Keon Newson had two blocked punts in the first half of the game, and added an interception in the second half ... the Falcons blocked just one punt during the entire 2001 season.

Redshirt sophomore Shaun Suisham kicked a career-long 43-yard field goal ... Suisham, who made three field goals a year ago, added a 25-yarder vs. the Golden Eagles for his first two-FG game.

Suisham made five extra points in the game, extending his streak to 48 consecutive PATs.

BGSU held TTU to just 38 rushing yards in 25 carries ... the game marked the ninth time in the last 12 games that BG held the opponent under 100 yards on the ground ... it was the 16th time since the beginning of the 2000 season that a Falcon foe failed to crack the century mark.

The following players saw their first game action at BGSU: Steve Sanders, John Nicholson, P.J. Pope, B.J. Lane, Charles Sharon, Jeff Runnells, Luis Llamas, Matt Leininger, Derrick Lett, Jelani Jordan, Mike Crumpler, Martez Johnson, Kenneth Brantley II, Monty Cooley, Lavelle Sharpe, Mike Thaler, Vardan Mkhitarian, Steve Navarro, Jamal Bryant, Aaron Burkhart, Rob Warren, and Anthony Hicks.

Three Falcons made their first-ever starts in the Brown and Orange: DE Mitchell Crossley, LB Jovon Burkes and RT James Williams.

Newson's interception was the second of his Falcon career.

The Falcons scored on seven of eight first-half drives ... BGSU scored touchdowns on each of the first four possessions.

TTU sophomore quarterback Robert Craft, making his first career start, completed 23 of 31 passes for 256 yards and a TD ... Craft completed 18 passes for 190 yards during all of last season.

A total of nine different Falcons had at least one reception in the win ... eight different BG players carried the ball at least once.
