BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team begins a busy early-season stretch this week, playing three matches in a five-day span. The Falcons (0-1-0) of head coach Andy Richards will host the University of Detroit Mercy in a Wednesday (Sept. 4) contest. That match is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at BGSU's Cochrane Field.
Following the UDM match, the Brown and Orange will take to the road for the first time this season. BGSU will begin the Mid-American Conference portion of the slate with a Friday (Sept. 6) match at the University of Toledo. That contest will begin at 5:00 p.m. at UT's Scott Park Field. Then, the Falcons will take on Eastern Illinois University in a Sunday (Sept. 8) contest, starting at 1:00 p.m. locally (2:00 p.m. BG time) at Lakeside Field in Charleston, Ill.
HEAD COACH ANDY RICHARDS
Andy Richards is in his third year as a head coach, all at BGSU, and has an overall record of 17-21-3 heading into the Detroit match. Richards, who came to BGSU after five years as an assistant coach at Oregon State University, was hired in April of 2000.
Ashlee Orr is in her third season with the Falcon program as well. Orr was named the BGSU assistant coach in late August of 2000.

THE SERIES
The Falcons trail the all-time series with Detroit by a 3-0 count, although BG did down the Titans in an exhibition contest last year. UDM has scored six goals in each of the first three meetings. The host Titans downed BG, 6-4, in 1998, despite a Tracy Gleixner hat trick (Oct. 27, 1998). Then, UDM blanked BG, 6-0, the next season in the lone regular-season meeting at Cochrane (Oct. 20, 1999). In 2000, Detroit posted a 6-3 home win (Sept. 6, 2000). Gleixner and Jill Conover each had goals for the Falcons.
BGSU and Toledo are deadlocked, 2-2-1, in their series, and both of the Falcons' wins have come at Scott Park Field. The Rockets won the teams' initial meeting, 3-2, at the Glass Bowl (Sept. 20, 1997). The following year, the visiting Falcons posted a 2-1 win (Sept. 17, 1998), before UT came to Cochrane Field and returned the favor the next fall (Oct. 30, 1999 -- OT). In the third consecutive 2-1 match in the series, the Brown and Orange captured a road victory two years ago (Sept. 22, 2000). Last year, the rivals battled to a 2-2 draw at Cochrane, with Kristy Coppes scoring one of the Falcons' goals.
The Falcons have never met Eastern Illinois in women's soccer.
FIRST OPENING LOSS
The Falcons lost the season-opening match for the first time in school history ... BGSU, a sixth-year program, had been 5-0-0 in openers heading into this season ... the Falcons are now 3-3-0 in home openers in program history.

CAPTAIN'S LOG
Senior goalkeeper Erika Flanders has been named BGSU's team captain for the 2002 season.
NOTING THE FALCONS
Head coach Andy Richards' starting lineup for the second half of the Michigan State match included eight freshmen, one sophomore, one junior and one senior ... the Falcons were kept off the scoreboard for the fifth consecutive match, dating to the end of last season ... Michigan State is the lone non-conference opponent that has appeared on BGSU's schedule in all six seasons.
