Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green held a 40-17 shot advantage against Notre Dame on Saturday night, but dropped its Central Collegiate Hockey Association home opener, 3-0, in front of 2, 623 in attendance at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The game marked the debut of new home (dark) sweaters, helmets, gloves, pants for the Falcons, that was greeted very warmly by the BGSU faithful.
However, two early turnovers resulted in Notre Dame goals and a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Mike Walsh capitalized on the first Falcon mistake just :17 seconds into the game for a 1-0 Irish lead. Then Josh Sciba scored the second goal of the game at just 2:47 of the game for the two-goal lead.
"We had polar opposite games," BGSU coach Scott Paluch said of Friday's and Saturday's games against Notre Dame. "It's not the way we wanted to start the game, less than three minutes into the game and down by two.
"We were able to generate a lot of offense after that, though. It was a game we thought we should have had a couple of goals, but Dave Brown was outstanding."
The freshman goalie for Notre Dame played very well, stopping 18 Falcon shots in the first period alone. He ended with 40 saves in the game for the Irish's first ever shutout of Bowling Green in 65 meetings.
After a scoreless second period that saw a lot of offensive opportunities for both teams, Notre Dame's Rob Globke added the third and final goal of the game at 1:39 of the third period. It was the only shot on goal in the third period for the Irish.
Notre Dame had 11 penalties while BGSU committed 10, but both teams were scoreless on the power play. ND was 0-for-6 and the Falcons were 0-for-7.
BG goalie Jordan Sigalet, a night after recording a school-record 56 saves vs. the Irish, had 14 saves.
BGSU (1-3 overall and in the CCHA) continues its six-game homestand next weekend with two games against non-conference opponent Union. The Flying Dutchmen play the Falcons Oct. 24-25 at the BGSU Ice Arena. Both games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. faceoffs.
NOTES:
* BGSU's Ryan Minnabarriet had his three-game point streak snapped in the 3-0 loss on Saturday. The junior had recorded two assists and a goal in the first three games of the season.
* The 3-0 loss to Notre Dame was the first time BGSU was shutout since Feb. 28, 2003, at Lake Superior (2-0).
