Bowling Green, Ohio - A defensive battle between Bowling Green and visiting Oakland on Tuesday afternoon turned into a 1-0 win for the Grizzlies at Cochrane Field.
After it appeared that the game may be heading for a scoreless end in regulation, OU's Philip Braathen passed to Mike Matalavy at the top of the box. Matalavy took aim and fired with BGSU's David DeGraff making a diving stop. However, the ball ricocheted off of the hands of DeGraff and to the feet of Danny Ng, who capitalized on an open net from five yards out on the left side at 81:21 for the 1-0 lead.
The Falcons had their chances. One came early in the second half off the foot of Andres Marques, who got a headed pass from P.J. Behan and shot from about 15 yards out, but missed wide right. Cory Stevens took a shot on net later in the second half from inside the box that was high on goalkeeper Jeff Wiese.
For the game, OU held a 14-6 overall shot advantage. DeGraff finished with four saves while Wiese did not have any saves, but a Dustin Snyder kick hit the right post. It was the 10th game in 14 appearances for DeGraff this season that the senior has held his opponent to one goal or less. He has four shutouts on the year.
BGSU is now 6-6-3 overall and wraps up its Mid-American Conference season this weekend. First, the Falcons travel to Marshall on Friday, Oct. 24, for a 5 p.m. match, changed from an original start time of 7 p.m. Then BGSU hosts Western Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Cochrane Field in a 2 p.m. contest.
