BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team had one final tuneup before beginning the 2003-04 regular season, as the Falcons played the University of Findlay in a closed scrimmage at Anderson Arena Thursday night (Nov. 13). In the 20-minute period, the Brown and Orange scored 19 of the first 21 points en route to a 45-18 win.
Unofficially (the stat crew used the scrimmage as one final practice before the regular season begins), the Falcons shot 57.6 percent in the scrimmage, making 19 of 33 shots from the field. BGSU held the Oilers without a field goal for the first 8:08, and allowed UF to shoot just 26.3%, on 5-of-19 shooting.
Freshman Megan Thorburn had 13 points to lead all scorers, while senior Lindsay Austin had nine points, four assists and three steals in only 11 minutes of action. Senior Stefanie Wenzel had seven points, while freshman Ali Mann had six points and five rebounds, leading both teams in the latter category. The Falcons' fifth starter, redshirt junior Kelly Kapferer, scored five points.
Findlay was led by Ashley Goldsberry's five points, while Lindsay Leffert and Nanette Cox each had four points.
After a Thorburn layup opened the scoring, Leffert sank a pair of free throws for the visitors at the 18:42 mark. Then, the Falcons reeled off the game's next 19 points, holding the Oilers scoreless for 5:52. Mann scored the first five points of the run, while Austin also had five points during the 19-0 stretch.
Findlay got as close as 13 points, when a Jennifer Winright layup cut the Falcon lead to 26-13, but a Thorburn layup sparked a 16-0 run over the next five-plus minutes, upping the margin to 29 points.
The Falcons held a 20-11 rebounding advantage and forced 16 UF turnovers. BGSU committed 12 turnovers in the 20 minutes of play. The Brown and Orange also held sizable advantages in points in the paint (22-6) and points off turnovers (20-9).
Following the 20-minute controlled scrimmage, the scoreboard was wiped clean, and the teams played several additional 10-minute periods.
BGSU now has a little over a week to prepare for the season opener. The Falcons will head cross-state to take on Youngstown State University on Saturday, Nov. 22. Then, on Nov. 25, the Brown and Orange will host the University of Detroit Mercy. That game, the first half of a hoops doubleheader at Anderson Arena, will begin at 5:45 p.m.
