CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Mid-American Conference office announced the 2003 all-league volleyball team, and Bowling Green State University's Taylor Twite represented the Falcons on the squad. Twite, a native of Lapeer, Mich., earned All-MAC Honorable Mention on the team.
The all-conference team, the result of voting by the MAC's 13 head coaches, was announced Wednesday (Nov. 19).
Twite, one of just two players to start all 31 matches this season, led the Falcons in four categories. She paced BGSU kills (460), kills per game (3.83), hitting percentage (.297) and points (526.5), and was second in all four blocking categories (16 solo, 85 assists, 101 total, 0.84 bpg).
MAC East Division and Regular Season champion Ohio and West Division champion Central Michigan highlight the All-MAC Volleyball teams, announced today by the conference office. The two schools had a combined seven student-athletes who were selected to either the first- or second-team all-MAC volleyball squads, with Ohio placing two on the first- and two on the second-team. CMU had one representative on the first team and two on the second team.
Ball State had two all-conference picks, as did Western Michigan and East Division runner-up Akron. The Falcons placed one student-athlete each on the all-conference team, as did Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Marshall and Northern Illinois.
Named to the first team are Ohio's Briana Adamovsky and Laura Hageman, CMU's Shaleene Glombowski, KSU's Danielle Holt, UA's Sandy Lewis and BSU's Sarah Obras.
Ohio's Adamovsky, who was one of three first-team recipients on the second-team a year ago, directed the Bobcat offense to a 15-1 record in league play. She finished the regular season third in the MAC in assists-per-game average (12.32) and ranked in the top-15 in the league in aces per game (0.34). Her assists averaged climbed to 13.05 in conference competition.
A five-time East Division Player of the Week, Hageman paced the Bobcats to a school-record tying 25 wins during the regular season along with a 21-match win streak. She was second in the conference in blocks per game (1.38), and also ranked in the top-15 in kills (4.02), points per game (5.54) and hitting percentage (.290). The 2002 MAC Player of the Year, she was also honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as its National Player of the Week, only the second player in MAC history to capture the honor.
CMU's Glomboswki topped the MAC charts in assists per game (13.25) and dished out 1,500-plus assists during the regular season. The senior aided the Chippewas to the school's first-ever MAC West Division title, while the 18 wins to date are the most by a CMU team since it won 19 in 1993. Twice this year Glombowski copped Player-of-the-Week honors in the West Division, including the last week of the regular season after averaging 15.02 assists per game in wins at BSU and WMU. She is the school's first all-MAC selection since 1998.
One of two sophomores on the first team and the school's first first-team performer since 1997, KSU's Holt leads the MAC in aces per game (0.61) and is second in kills (4.93) and points per game (5.54). Her 527 kills this year are a school record and is tied for the 13th most in league history, while she is also second on the team with 335 digs. In Tuesday's first round match against Western Michigan, Holt set a school, league and tournament record with 45 kills. Last year as a freshman, Holt garnered second-team all-MAC honors.
UA's Lewis ranks in the top-five in the league in three statistical categories -- kills per game (3.91), digs per game (4.20) and points per game (4.52). Three times over the final five weeks of the regular season she was honored as the East Division Player of the Week. She ranks fifth all-time in the league in career digs (1.571) and 18th in kills (1,416). During her four year as a Zip, her teams have averaged nearly 19 overall victories and 12 MAC wins and never finished out of the top three in the division standings.
Obras, last year's MAC Freshman of the Year and a first-team all-conference honoree, leads the conference with a league-record 623 kills (5.42 kpg) and is also third in digs per game (4.34). Three times the sophomore was tabbed the West Division Player of the Week, and she is currently 14th nationally in kills-per-game average. Sixteen times this year she has delivered 20 or more kills, including four of 30-plus.
Named to the all-MAC second team are CMU's Emily Lovejoy and Meghan Moore, Ohio's Lindsay Judice and Holly Schetzsle, BSU's Stephanie Keller and WMU's Carman Malone.
Capturing honorable mention all-conference honors are WMU's Shaylen Jackson, NIU's Tera Lobdell, Marshall's Nicole Michal, UA's Ashleigh Nugent, EMU's Katie Wagenmaker, in addition to Twite.
Comprising the all-MAC freshman team are Ohio's Michaele Blackburn, BSU's Kelly Cochran, CMU's Moore, NIU's Kate McCullagh, Buffalo's Nicole Morzenti and Miami's Lauren Slusser.
The league's Player of the Year award as well as Freshman of the Year will be presented Thursday evening (Nov. 20) at the MAC's awards banquet at the Radisson Hotel Roberts in Muncie, Ind. The MAC Coach of the Year will be announced next Monday, Nov. 24.
