Ithaca, N.Y. - Visiting Bowling Green tied #11 Cornell Friday night, 1-1, in front of a soldout Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y., with 3,836 in attendance.
On the first power play of the game, Falcon junior Steve Brudzewski redirected a pass from Taylor Christie at the top of the crease that found the back of the net for a 1-0 BGSU lead at just 1:35. Senior D'Arcy McConvey also earned an assist on Brudzewski's third goal of the season and first PPG.
The Falcons were the aggressors for the entire first period, despite a 10-6 shot advantage by the Big Red. BGSU was whistled for four penalties in the first period and killed off the first three successfully. However, with just point-four seconds remaining in the first period CU sophomore Cam Abbott pounded in a rebound at the top of the crease to knot the game up 1-1. The Big Red power play snapped a streak of 39-straight power plays killed off by the Falcons dating back to Oct. 24 vs. Union (six-plus games).
In the second period it was Cornell controlling the tempo of the game. The Big Red held a 10-2 shot advantage and were in the Falcon zone for a majority of the period. However, BGSU goalie Jordan Sigalet stopped all 10 shots he faced and the Falcon defense bent, but didn't break.
Both teams duked it out in the third period, each finishing with 16 shots on goal. Each goalie played strong and hard hits were abundant by both squads. Cornell had the only shot attempt in the overtime period.
Cornell finished with a 37-24 shot advantage in the game while Sigalet recorded 36 saves. BGSU remained undefeated when scoring a power-play goal, improving to 3-0-3. The Falcons now have a power-play percentage of .143 (9-of-63) and a penalty-kill percentage of .922 (59-of-64) in 12 games.
BGSU now stands at 3-5-4 overall while #11 Cornell is 3-1-3. The Falcons travel to Hamilton, N.Y. on Saturday, Nov. 22, for a 3 p.m. non-conference contest at Colgate. The game will be joined in progress following the BGSU vs. Ball State football game on 88.1 FM, WBGU.
BGSU Scott Paluch Post-Game Quotes...
"I thought it was a terrific college hockey game. Cornell plays so well in the offensive zone. Their so strong down low. I thought our guys were pretty patient. It's hard to contain Cornell for an entire 65 mintues. I thought our guys held up well against a top team in the country."
"Jordan's the backbone of our team. He's a good goalie but he does a lot of things off the ice that leads our team. When Jordan's playing well we're going to be in good shape."
"Territorially, Cornell did a great job of taking the second period. But I thought our guys did a real good job of bend-don't-break. I thought it was a real good road game for our team."
