YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Host Youngstown State University, on the strength of a 13-0 run midway through the second half, posted a 79-67 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Saturday evening (Nov. 22). The non-conference game, the season opener for both teams, was held at YSU's Beeghly Center.
The Penguins' Jessica Olmstead had a career-high 25 points, making 10 of her 14 shots from the field, as the host team shot over 50 percent in each half. YSU shot 54.9% from the field for the game, while holding the Falcons to a field-goal percentage of 37.7%.
BGSU's Megan Thorburn, in her collegiate debut, scored 22 points to lead the Falcons. Thorburn made three of her four attempts from three-point range, as the Brown and Orange went 8-of-17 from long range on the night.
Senior point guard Lindsay Austin joined Thorburn in double digits, with 11 points, and Austin added a game-high seven assists. She tied freshman Ali Mann for team honors with six rebounds, as the Falcons held a 37-32 advantage on the boards.
Freshmen Liz Honegger and Amber Flynn each scored eight points off the bench, with Honegger going 2-of-3 from three-point land.
Senior Stefanie Wenzel added six points, while Mann had five. All six of Mann's rebounds came at the offensive end, as the Falcons had a team total of 21 offensive boards.
Both Cathy Hanek and Jen Perugini had 15 points, with Perugini making 6-of-8 shots from the field. She added nine rebounds, while the Penguins' Jessica Forsythe had seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Penguins led for the game's first 11-plus minutes, before back-to-back triples by Honegger gave the Falcons a 19-17 advantage. The game featured two ties and five lead changes over the next three minutes, before back-to-back baskets by Olmstead gave the Penguins a 28-25 advantage. The hosts went into the lockerroom still holding a three-point advantage.
In the second half, however, Austin found Thorburn for a layup on the fastbreak, and a Wenzel three-pointer gave BGSU a 41-39 lead. The Panguins tied the game before an Austin layup in transition gave the Brown and Orange a two-point edge.
The Falcons held the lead for the next four minutes, and went up by four, 50-46, on a Flynn layup with 12:04. But, an Olmstead hoop began the decisive 13-0 run, and the Falcons never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
YSU went to the foul line 23 times, making 20, while the Falcons were 7-of-13 from the stripe.
The Falcons return to action Tuesday (Nov. 25), facing Detroit in the home opener. That game, the first half of a BGSU basketball doubleheader at Anderson Arena, begins at 5:45 p.m.
