ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU opened the season with a 79-67 loss at Youngstown State Saturday (Nov. 22) ... ended the 2002-03 season with a record of 12-16, and the Falcons finished the MAC campaign with a 5-11 league record ... BG tied with Central Michigan for sixth in the MAC's West Division ... in 2003-04, the Falcons return six letterwinners from that team, including a pair of starters in seniors Lindsay Austin and Stefanie Wenzel ... in addition, the Falcons also welcome back two juniors, Tene Lewis and Sakima Smith, along with a pair of sophomores in Jill Lause and Marisa Smith.
The nine newcomers, as mentioned, include redshirt junior Kelly Kapferer and redshirt sophomore Casey McDowell ... Kapferer earned two letters at BGSU before sitting out last season, while McDowell sat out last year at BG after transferring from Indiana State ... the freshman class consists of Amber Flynn (Cincinnati, Ohio) Julie Gompers (Wheeling, W.Va.), Liz Honegger (Lafayette, Ind.), Carin Horne (Lima, Ohio), Ali Mann (Chelsea, Mich.), Kim Nowakowski (Butler, Pa.) and Megan Thorburn (Mason, Mich.) ... Nowakowski is sidelined indefinitely due to injury, but each of the other six frosh saw action in both the Falcons' exhibition (vs. the Premier All-Stars, Nov. 3), and five played in the YSU game.
On the sidelines, Curt Miller is joined by third-year assistants Jennifer Roos and Brandi Poole ... Kevin Eckert begins his second season on the staff.
The Falcons went 6-6 at home last season, and BG was 5-9 on the road and 1-1 in neutral-site games ... in MAC contests, BGSU finished 4-4 at home and 1-7 away from Anderson Arena.
IN THE HOME OPENER...
The Falcons are 19-10 in home openers over the years (the locations of most games in 1973-74, BG's first season, are unknown) ... but, BGSU has dropped the last two home-opening games, to Youngstown State last year (70-64; Nov. 22, 2002) and Eastern Kentucky the previous season (83-63; Nov. 27, 2001) ... despite that recent losing streak, the Falcons still have won 12 of the last 15 home-opening games.
SCOUTING DETROIT
Detroit enters Tuesday's game with a 1-0 record, after opening the season with a road win over a MAC team ... Titan junior Elizabeth Krzyzek's 15-foot jumper at the buzzer gave UDM a 50-49 win at Toledo Sunday (Nov. 23) ... sophomore forward Lindsey Pasquinzo led the team with 19 points, while senior forward Lori Wild had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds ... senior center Nicole Anaejionu, sophomore guard Caitie Goddard and junior guard Jennifer McGee joined Pasquinzo and Wild in the starting lineup at UT ... first-year head coach Mickey Barrett inherits a team with 13 returning letterwinners, including all five starters ... last year's squad went 10-20 overall and 6-10 in Horizon League play, but advanced all the way to the championship game of the league tourney ... senior Sara Crum and Wild averaged 10.7 and 10.2 points per game, respectively, in 2002-03 ... Wild also paced the team in rebounding, averaging 6.4 per game ... the UDM job marks the first collegiate head-coaching gig for Barrett, who spent the previous 12 seasons as an assistant coach for the Titan men's squad ... UDM's athletics web site is www.detroittitans.com.
THE BGSU-DETROIT SERIES
The Falcons trail Detroit, 10-6, in the all-time series between the teams ... the Titans have won the last three series meetings, including a 94-75 decision in the teams' last game at Anderson Arena (Dec. 2, 2000) ... in the most recent meeting, the host Titans captured a 67-62 win in Curt Miller's second game at the BGSU helm (Nov. 20, 2001) ... BGSU had won four consecutive series meetings prior to UDM's current three-game win streak ... the teams are deadlocked, 4-4, in meetings in BG, but the Falcons have won three of the last four games in Anderson Arena ... eight series meetings, including three of the last four games, have been decided by single digits ... of the remaining eight games, six have been decided by more than 20 points.
LAST TIME OUT
Host Youngstown State, on the strength of a 13-0 run midway through the second half, posted a 79-67 win over Falcons Saturday evening (Nov. 22) in the season opener for both teams at YSU's Beeghly Center ... the Penguins' Jessica Olmstead had a career-high 25 points, making 10 of her 14 shots from the field, as the host team shot over 50 percent in each half ... YSU shot 54.9% from the field for the game, while holding the Falcons to a field-goal percentage of 37.7% ... freshman Megan Thorburn, in her collegiate debut, scored 22 points to lead the Falcons ... Thorburn made three of her four attempts from three-point range, as the Brown and Orange went 8-of-17 from long range on the night ... senior Lindsay Austin joined Thorburn in double digits, with 11 points, and Austin added a game-high seven assists ... she tied freshman Ali Mann for team honors with six rebounds, as the Falcons held a 37-32 advantage on the boards ... freshmen Liz Honegger and Amber Flynn each scored eight points off the bench, with Honegger going 2-of-3 from three-point land ... senior Stefanie Wenzel added six points, while Mann had five ... both Cathy Hanek and Jen Perugini had 15 points for YSU ... the Penguins led for the game's first 11-plus minutes, before back-to-back triples by Honegger gave the Falcons a 19-17 advantage ... the game featured two ties and five lead changes over the next three minutes, before back-to-back baskets by Olmstead gave the Penguins a 28-25 advantage ... the hosts went into the lockerroom still holding a three-point advantage ... in the second half, however, Austin found Thorburn for a layup on the fastbreak, and a Wenzel three-pointer gave BGSU a 41-39 lead ... the Panguins tied the game before an Austin layup in transition gave the Brown and Orange a two-point edge ... the Falcons went up by four, 50-46, on a Flynn layup with 12:04 remaining, but an Olmstead hoop began the decisive 13-0 run, and the Falcons never got closer than six points the rest of the way ... YSU went to the foul line 23 times, making 20, while the Falcons were 7-of-13 from the stripe.
NICE DEBUT
Freshman Megan Thorburn had a nice start to her Falcon career ... Thorburn, a native of Mason, Mich., scored the team's first six points of the game en route to a team-high 22 points at Youngstown State ... she went 3-of-4 from three-point range on the night, adding a rebound and a pair of assists ... Thorburn had nine first-half points, then scored 13 of the Falcons' 31 points after the intermission.
NICE DEBUT(S)
In addition to Megan Thorburn, a number of Falcon newcomers made their presence felt in the YSU game ... Ali Mann joined Thorburn in the starting lineup vs. the Penguins, and tied for team honors with six rebounds ... all six of Mann's rebounds came at the offensive end, as the Falcons had a team total of 21 offensive boards ... Mann also scored five points ... frosh Amber Flynn and Liz Honegger each had eight points off the bench, combining to go 6-of-11 from the field ... Flynn grabbed three offensive boards in 14 minutes, while Honegger also had three rebounds and went 2-of-3 from three-point land in 16 minutes of action ... freshman Carin Horne also made her BG debut, with three rebounds in eight minutes, while sophomore Casey McDowell played for the first time after sitting out last season as a transfer from Indiana State ... McDowell had three points and two assists in 11 minutes.
PROGRAMS ... GET YOUR PROGRAMS
Falcon fans might want to invest in a game program, as a bulk of the team's minutes in the Youngstown State contest went to newcomers ... a total of 11 players saw action in the game, including seven players that did not suit up for the Falcons last year, and it was not uncommon to see as many as four of those players on the floor at the same time ... newcomers combined to play a total of 122 of the team's 200 minutes in the game.
THE FRESHMAN IMPACT
The Falcon freshmen combined to score the first eight points of the YSU game, and BG frosh scored 17 of the team's first 19 points in the contest ... in all, the five freshmen combined to score 24 of BG's 36 first-half points, en route to 43 total points in the game.
NEW STARTERS
As mentioned, Falcon freshmen Ali Mann and Megan Thorburn were in the starting lineup for their respective collegiate debuts ... redshirt junior Kelly Kapferer also started the game, giving BG three starters who were not with the team a year ago.
BOARDWORK
The Falcons held a 37-32 advantage in rebounding at Youngstown State ... BGSU outrebounded the opponent on only four occasions last year ... the Falcons had a total of 21 offensive rebounds vs. the Penguins, the team's most in nearly two years (since BG pulled down 27 offensive boards vs. Wright State on Dec. 15, 2001).
THE MOST NEWCOMERS SINCE...
This season, Curt Miller and his staff welcome seven frosh, and a total of nine players who did not see game action for the Falcons a year ago ... the total of nine newcomers is the Falcons' most in two decades.
SENIORS LEAD THE WAY
A pair of senior co-captains, Lindsay Austin and Stefanie Wenzel, will look to guide the youthful Falcons in 2003-04 ... Austin, in her fourth season, already has made 80 career starts in the Brown and Orange ... she has 344 assists, good for sixth place on the BGSU career list ... Wenzel burst onto the scene as a sophomore, leading the MAC in scoring increase (she went from 2.3 points per game as a freshman to 11.6 ppg the following year) ... Wenzel is the lone Falcon to average double digits in scoring in each of the last two seasons ... Austin and Wenzel lead the active Falcons with 700 and 649 career points, respectively.
THERE'S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
The loss at Youngstown State marked the first time that BG has dropped the road opener in three years ... obviously, Curt Miller is now 2-1 in such games as a collegiate head coach ... BGSU won at YSU, 71-61, two years ago (Nov. 17, 2001), then captured last year's road-opening game, 77-62, vs. Florida Atlantic (Dec. 6, 2002).
AUSTIN COULD ENTER UNCHARTED WATERS
Senior Lindsay Austin has a chance to go where no Falcon has gone before ... she enters the Detroit game with career totals of 700 points, 344 assists and 158 steals ... with a successful senior season, Austin could become the 17th player in school history to score 1,000 career points, and just the fourth Falcon to reach the 400-assist mark ... Austin also could become only the fourth BGSU player to crack the 200-steals barrier ... no Falcon ever has totalled 1,000 points and 400 assists in a career ... only one BG player, Judit Lendvay (1989-93), had 1,000 points (1,078) and 300 assists (304).
WENZEL EYES THAT CENTURY MARK, TOO
Both of the Falcon seniors have a chance to reach the 1,000-point barrier for their careers ... Stefanie Wenzel enters the UDM contest with a career total of 649 points ... 613 of those points have come since her freshman year, an average of 10.8 points per game over the last two-plus seasons ... the lone returnee to have averaged double digits in scoring in each of the last two years, Wenzel had 15 games of 10 or more points last year, the most among returning Falcons.
AUSTIN ADDS AN ASSIST (344 OF THEM, ACTUALLY)
Last February, Lindsay Austin moved past Judit Lendvay (304 assists from 1989-93) into sixth place on the BGSU career list ... entering the Detroit game, Austin now has a career total of 344 assists ... she is closing in on fifth-place Cathy Koch (1988-92), who had 347 assists in her Falcon career ... Jaymee Wappes (1996-2000) is fourth with 387, while Dee Knoblauch (1979-83) holds the BG record with 673 career assists.
WENZEL MOVING UP ON THREE-POINT LISTS
Senior Stefanie Wenzel is ranked on each of the school's career three-point lists ... Wenzel has made a total of 79 treys to date, tying her for seventh on the school list ... she ranks eighth in career three-point percentage (.356; 79-of-222), and is ninth all-time in treys attempted.
142 GAMES AND COUNTING
The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the past five-plus years ... in fact, BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 142 games, a school record ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record was 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
