Kalamazoo, Mich. - A third-period Bowling Green comeback that sent the game to overtime was spoiled when Western Michigan's Lucas Drake knocked in a rebound in front of the net to give the host Broncos a 4-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory. Drake's goal came with 21 seconds remaining in the five-minute overtime.
BGSU had sent the game to overtime thanks to two unassisted goals in the third period. The first third-period goal that brought the Falcons to within one was by sophomore Brett Pilkington at 4:41. Pilkington took an errant pass by a Bronco defender and backhanded his fifth goal of the season past WMU goalie Scott Foster to cut the Bronco lead to 3-2.
The Falcons knotted the game at 3-3 when senior D'Arcy McConvey took a WMU turnover in the slot area and fired a shot top-shelf past Foster at 13:49 of the third period for his second goal of the year. BGSU ended with a 14-7 shot advantage in the third period while the shots were even in the third period (3-3).
BGSU junior Alex Rogosheske gave the visitors a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when he scored his first goal of the season at 11:30. McConvey and Steve Brudzewski assisted on the goal. The opening period ended with BGSU holding a 1-0 lead despite being outshot 9-5 and having two power-play opportunities.
WMU then exploded for three goals within a 7:13 span in the second period to stake a 3-1 lead. Pat Dwyer (PPG, 7:01), Dana Lattery (12:34), and Jeremy Cheyne (14:14) gave the Broncos their three unanswered goals. WMU held a 16-7 shot advantage in the second period.
"I thought for two periods Western Michigan controlled the game and then we gave ourselves an opportunity to earn a point," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "But, we didn't make the plays to capitalize. Our special teams didn't help us."
The Broncos held a 35-29 shot advantage for the game. Junior Jordan Sigalet ended with a game-high 31 saves while Foster had 26 saves for the Broncos.
WMU converted on its only power play of the night while the Falcons finished 0-for-5 with the man advantage. The Broncos improve to 6-7-2 overall and 3-5-1 in the CCHA while BGSU drops to 3-6-5 overall and 2-5-2 in the CCHA.
The game marked the fourth-straight contest that BGSU has played to overtime and snapped a streak of three-straight ties. The BGSU school record for consecutive overtime games is five set over the last five games of the 1972 season.
The Falcons host CCHA-leading Ohio State this Saturday at the BGSU Ice Arena. The Buckeyes enter the game ranked eighth in this week's USA Today poll and ninth in the USCHO.com poll.
Saturday's game against OSU will be Sentinel-Tribune night with the first 2,000 fans receiving Falcon Hockey trading cards, which will include both current players and "Falcon Legends". Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
