Brown Squad Steals Show On Day One

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics program opened their 2004 schedule with the annual Orange & Brown scrimmage, with the Brown squad claiming victory on day one, 163.050-161.600. Sophomore Erin McCollam placed in the top two in three events to lead the Brown squad.
Newcomer Jillian Stranges led the Brown squad on the bars with a 9.675 and was followed by junior Kristen DiPietro with a 9.525.
For the Orange squad, senior captain Melissa Popovich led all performers with a 9.775 on the bars. Junior Kari Elste finished directly behind Popovich with a 9.725.
With the help of Pia Sjovall, Erin McCollam and freshman Jessica McArther the Brown squad dominated the vault event. Sjovall led all competitors with a 9.700, while McCollam and McArther both posted 9.650.
Popovich and Bre Metzger lead the Orange squad with 9.55 on the vault.
With a 9.75 from Popovich, 9.7 from Bethany Kenel and a 9.65 from Jessica Guyer, the Orange squad posted solid numbers on the beam. DiPietro led the Brown team with a 9.75.
In the final event Popovich once again led the way for Orange, scoring a team-best 9.800. DiPietro placed second with a 9.750.
The Falcons are back in action Saturday afternoon (Dec. 12) when day two of the Orange & Brown scrimmage will continue at 2:00 p.m. inside the Eppler Complex.
