CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University has swept this week's Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards, the league office has announced. Senior Josh Harris (football) has been named the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, while senior Stefanie Wenzel (women's basketball) is this week's female honoree.
Harris, a native of Westerville, Ohio (North H.S.), earns the honor for the third time this season.
The senior threw for three touchdowns and caught a 48-yard TD pass from Cole Magner, as the Falcons won the MAC's West Division with a 31-23 victory over arch-rival Toledo Saturday (Nov. 29). Harris was 21-of-26 through the air, for a completion percentage of .808, and had a total of 256 passing yards. Harris also had 75 rushing yards and, of course, the 48 receiving yards.
In the win, Harris accounted for 379 of BGSU's 433 total yards, and led the Falcons on four consecutive scoring drives (three touchdowns and a field goal) to begin the second half. He now has a total of 3,167 yards passing this season, making him only the second player in BGSU history to eclipse the 3,000-yard plateau for a season.
Harris has now participated in a total of 572 plays this season, a new MAC record. He broke the old record that he shared with Byron Leftwich (539 plays; Harris in 2002, Leftwich in 2001). The #20/23 Falcons (10-2, 7-1 MAC) host Miami in Thursday's MAC Championship game, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Perry Stadium.
Wenzel, a native of Sussex, Wis., averaged a team-high 17.0 points in last week's three games, helping the Falcons to a 2-1 mark. She led the Falcons with 14 points in a blowout win over Detroit, 77-53, in Tuesday's (Nov. 25) home opener, then was named to the all-tournament team as the Falcons recorded a runner-up finish in the Flint Hills Resources Islander Classic, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
In that tournament, Wenzel scored 10 points in BG's opener, a 10-point win over Southeast Missouri State. She then exploded for 27 points in 27 minutes in the championship game, a 68-59 loss to host TAMU-CC. Her 10 field goals in that game included four three-pointers.
In addition to scoring, Wenzel also led BG with six three-pointers last week. She also averaged 3.3 rebounds and shot .472 from the field on the week. Wenzel now has 700 career points. This season to date, Wenzel is averaging a team-best 14.3 points per game heading into the Falcons' Wednesday (Dec. 3) contest at Bucknell.
Harris, an interpersonal communication major, has a 3.08 cumulative GPA, while Wenzel has a 3.97 cumulative GPA as an integrated language arts major.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the previous week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
