Cleveland, Ohio - Bowling Green State University swimmer Amy Smith was named to the 2003 Mid-American Conference All-Academic Team. The team was voted on by the faculty athletic representatives at the nine member institutions that sponsor men's swimming and diving. Due to a tie in the voting, the 15 member team was expanded to 19.
Smith holds a 4.00 grade-point-average and is majoring in social work. The Livonia, Mich. native competed in the freestyle and relays this year for BGSU. The sophomore helped the Falcons to a sixth-place finish in this year's MAC Championships.
MAC Champion Miami had three student-athletes honored, Amy Miranda, Colleen Rambasek and Becca Vianello. Akron led all schools with four members. Buffalo and Eastern Michigan also had three honorees. Ball State and Ohio had two members, while Marshall and Bowling Green had one honoree each.
The honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
