Ann Arbor, Mich. - Bowling Green freshman Mike Falk scored the game's opening goal in the first period, but host Michigan tallied the next three goals, including two in the second period, to post a 3-1 win over the Falcons in the first game of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Falk netted his 11th goal of the season, and extended his goal-scoring streak to four games, at 12:01 of the first period for a 1-0 BGSU lead. Chris Pedota and D'Arcy McConvey assisted on the goal. Falk scored 14 seconds after a Falcon power play had finished when he rebounded a shot from Chris Pedota who had fired from the top of the left circle.
The score stayed that way through the first period. UM held a 9-7 shot advantage in the opening period.
After a minor penalty was called on Falk just 13 seconds into the second period, UM's John Shouneyia tied the game, 1-1, at 56 seconds of the period with a power-play goal. Jeff Tambellini and Brandon Rogers assisted on the Wolverine goal. UM held a 19-8 shot advantage in the second period.
Michigan (25-9-3) then took the lead on a goal by Jed Ortmeyer at 8:13 of the second period, 2-1. Tambellini and Shouneyia earned assists. UM outshot the Falcons 12-10 in the final period. UM's Dwight Helminen scored the third goal of the game for the home team at 3:07 of the third period for a two-goal Wolverine lead, 3-1.
BGSU had three attempts in its first power play of the game, but took just two shots in its final four power plays, ending 0-for-5 with the man-advantage. Michigan was 1-for-7 on the power play.
"The first power play, we were able to shoot the puck and after that we made some mistakes," said BGSU coach Scott Paluch. "They're a good, quick hockey team and when the game was in their favor that is what you saw. For three periods we did a good job in the neutral zone."
BGSU goalie Jordan Sigalet stopped several breakaways by the Wolverines and stopped 13 of 14 shot attempts on the UM power play. Michigan outshot BGSU 40-25 for the game with Sigalet making 37 saves. BGSU had an extra attacker for the final 1:49 of the game when Sigalet was pulled from the net.
"It was a hard fought game to the end," said Sigalet. "It was nice to get the first goal and we need to build off of that tomorrow night."
UM goalie Al Montoya had 24 saves on 25 shots faced. BGSU had 12 penalties (24 PIM) while Michigan had 10 penalties (20 PIM).
BGSU (8-24-3 overall) will play Michigan in game two of the best-of-three series Saturday night in Yost Ice Arena. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
