BGSU Coach Dan Dakich has the highest conference winning percentage (58.3) among active MAC coaches (3 years or more in the league) and in the last five seasons has guided the Falcons to a 92-57 record (an average of 18.4 wins per season) and has posted a 56-34 MAC record, the second best among the 13 league members in that same span.
He became the second fastest men's basketball coach at BGSU to reach the 100-victory mark when the Falcons defeated Miami, 51-48 on March 1, 2003.
Overall at BGSU, he is 102-73 and is second in BGSU men's basketball history in winning percentage (58.3) and fifth in victories. The 2002-03 season may have been the most rewarding as a coach for Dakich, despite the team's 13-16 final record. With an injury depleted roster that concluded the season with six scholarship recruits, two football players and a walk-on, the Falcons advanced to the MAC Tournament in Cleveland for the fourth straight year. In addition, BGSU posted wins over three of the top four regular season finishers, and captured first-time road wins at Kent State and at Ball State. BGSU also took the nation's top-ranked team at the time, Alabama, down to the wire and compiled a six-game winning streak midway during the season.
Under Dakich, the Falcons are one of just five teams (BGSU, Miami, Central Michigan, Marshall and Kent State) to qualify for all four MAC Tournaments held in Gund Arena.
Honors and Awards
Junior Kevin Netter earned MAC West Player of the Week honors, January 13, while sophomore John Reimold captured the award, December 30.
Netter was named honorable mention All-MAC this season, while Ronald Lewis was named to the MAC All-Freshman team.
Sophomore John Reimold received the John McClendon Outstanding Player Award for his 24-point effort against Cleveland State, December 28. An integratd social studies major, Reimold was named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on January 7.
Player Notes
Junior Kevin Netter led the Falcons in scoring with a 15.3 points per game average, a 10.9 point improvement from last season. He also led the team in field goal percentage (54.7), blocked shots (38) and free throw attempts (205). Netter will enter his senior season ninth on the school's all-time blocked shots list with 65 career swats. His 38 blocked shots this season is the second highest single-season performance behind Ed Colbert who had 44 in 1990-91. He also ranks sixth on the school's all-time field goal percentage list at 54.1 percent.
Sophomore John Reimold was second on the team in scoring (15.0 points) and rebounds (144/5.0 per game). His 84 three-point field goals was the second most in a single season (behind Keith McLeod's 89 last season), but his 2.89 triples per game is a new school-record. McLeod held the previous mark of 2.696 set last year. Reimold's 42.0 three-point field goal percentage ranks second on the career-list for BGSU players who have made 50 or more three-pointers in their career. He had four or more three-pointers in a game 11 times this season.
Freshman Ronald Lewis averaged 12.5 points per game and raised his scoring average three-points in the final eight games. During the last four games of the season, Lewis averaged 23.5 points, including 29.0 in the MAC Tournament. He set a BGSU record by making 22 free throws at Ball State in the tournament's first round game and established MAC Tournament records for free throws made and attempted in a game and in the entire tournament in just two games. He led the team with 149 free throws made and is 10th on the school's all-time career free throw percentage list at 79.7. He is the first freshman to lead the Falcons in rebounds (145/5.0) since Anthony Stacey led BGSU in the 1995-96 season. His 351 points scored is the fourth highest for a BGSU freshman behind Stacey (433, 1995-96), Colin Irish (375 in 1979-80) and Antonio Daniels (354 in 1993-94). His 149 free throws made is the most ever by a Falcon freshman. He finished second on the team in assists (73) and steals (36).
Senior Cory Ryan averaged 8.9 points, led the team in steals with 46 and was third in assists with 67. He also had the team's best assist/turnover ratio (1.46). He scored 613 points in his career (6.0 average), hit 117 three-pointers (tied for fifth all-time at BGSU), and had 119 assists and 90 steals in his career. He played in 103 career games.
Sophomore Cory Eyink averaged 6.1 points and 4.3 rebounds. He led the team in three-point field goal percentage at 48.0 percent, which is the third best single-season percentage in BGSU history.
Junior Jabari Mattox averaged 5.4 points, 4.4 assists and 3.4 rebounds, but missed the last seven games due to a knee injury. He also had 31 steals and shot 34.8 percent from three-point range.
Freshman Cole Magner joined the squad in December and averaged 3.2 points. He shot 44.4 percent from three-point range. Magner had 22 steals and 19 assists.
Freshman Raheem Moss played in 26 games and started twice. He averaged 2.5 points and shot 91.7 percent from the free throw line, making 11 of 12 charity tosses.
Freshman walk-on Patrick Phillips played in eight games and scored six points.
Freshman Keon Newson joined the team in December and scored seven points and had seven steals and eight rebounds in limited action. He also had four assists.
Sophomore Germain Fitch (6.5 points in two games) and junior Josh Almanson (6.2 points in six games) will both apply for medical hardships to receive another year of eligibility.
