Bowling Green State University cross country head coach Cami Wells has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Vivien Briard (Chichey, France), Edgar Ramirez (Carpentersville, Ill.) and Jeff Wright (Sylvania, Ohio) will join the Falcon men's cross country program for the 2003-04 academic year, while Bridget Dalic (Strongsville, Ohio) will join the BGSU women's cross country and track and field teams.
Briard has attended LYCEE Arago High School and Reims Champagne Ardenne University. He is a transfer student who has completed two years of university studies while competing in cross country and track in his native country. Briard qualified for the French Championships in cross country, as well as in the 1,500-meter steeplechase. The son of Chantal Briard, he plans to study sports administration at BGSU.
"Vivien's experience and development will be a great asset to the team as we continue to rebuild," said Wells. "I am pleased that Vivien has chosen to study and compete at BGSU. He will play a big part in the leadership of our team as we head into the 2003 cross country season."
Ramirez currently attends Dundee Crown High School, where he is a three-sport athlete. A state qualifier in cross country for coach Tom Smith, he was named to the all-area team in that sport in the fall, and has a three-mile personal best of 14:50. A four-year member of the varsity track team, he is the son of Jesse and Maria Ramirez and plans to major in animation.
"At first, I never really believed that I would be running and studying at BG," said Ramirez. "It was just a dream. Dreams do come true and for me, it's only the beginning."
Wells said, "I am very happy to have Edgar join the team. He is fairly new to the sport of cross country, having only competed one-and-a-half years in high school after making the transition from football to cross country a couple of years ago. In that short time, Edgar has run some very competitive times and has tremendous potential for the future.
"I am very impressed with Edgar's ambition. He has set a lot of goals for himself, both academically and athletically, and demonstrated the work ethic necessary to make them a reality."
Wright is a senior at Northview High School, and was an All-Northern Lakes League First-Team selection as a senior as his squad won the first league championship in school history. Wright, coached by Ross Dye, was named to the All-NLL Second Team as a junior in 2001. He captained both the cross country and track teams, and earned three letters in each of those sports as well as one in wrestling. The son of Gregory and Cynthia Wright, he plans to major in either education or business at BGSU.
"Jeff is one of the area's top cross country runners," said Wells. "He was the runner up in the Northern Lakes League this past fall and also was a regional meet qualifier. I am very pleased to that Jeff has decided to stay in Northeast Ohio and attend BGSU. He is a very solid addition to the team. Jeff has shown steady improvement throughout his high school career and has a bright future in the sport."
Dalic is a senior at Strongsville High School. She helped her team to three consecutive team appearances in the Ohio State Cross Country Championships, and has earned all-state honors as an individual for coach Mike Knapik. A three-time all-district and all-region performer, she also competes in track, and finished 11th at the state meet as a junior. Dalic earned All-America honors in the 4xMile Relay, and has personal-best times of 18:46 in the 5,000 meters and 11:24 in the 3,200 meters. She has captained both the cross country and track teams, and has participated in D.A.R.E. and National Honor Society over the past two years. Dalic chose BG over schools including Maryland, Ohio State, Butler and Ashland. The daughter of Mark and Linda Dalic, she plans to major in education.
"Bridget is a very strong distance runner," said Wells. "She has shown a great deal of competitiveness and desire every time I have had the opportunity to see her race. Bridget is an athlete that can make an immediate impact as an entering freshman on our cross country team. She will also be competing on the track team, concentrating on the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter distances. Bridget will be a great asset to us in the long distance area of the track program."
Dalic joins five earlier signees in the 2003-04 Falcon recruiting class for women's track and field. Scott Sehmann, head coach of the BGSU women's track and field program, announced the signings of Andrea Pollack (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), Amanda Sefcik (Northfield, Ohio/Nordonia), Lyndi Springer (Celina, Ohio), Nicole Standback (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) and Veronica Vance (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) in the fall.
