Columbus, Ohio - Ohio State used five different pitchers and held Bowling Green to just six hits in defeating the Falcons, 6-0, on Wednesday night at Bill Davis Stadium in front of 2,013. The six hits came off the bat of six different Falcons.
BGSU trailed just 2-0 through six innings before OSU plated two runs in each the seventh and eighth innings to pull ahead.
Falcon freshman Tyler Johnson (1-2) pitched well in the opening two innings of the game, giving up just one unearned run for the loss. In the second inning, the first two OSU batters reached on singles before Johnson struck out designated hitter Terry Pettorini for the first out. After a wild pitch moved runners to second and third base, Johnson struck out Brett Garrard for the second out of the frame. A passed ball in the next at-bat by Jesse Sobol allowed Cody Caughenbaugh to score from third base for the first run of the game.
OSU scored its second run of the game in the fourth inning to grab a 2-0 lead.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the diamond, BGSU's six hits all came with two outs. The Falcons were only able to get runners in scoring position in the third and sixth innings but could not plate a run.
The BGSU pitching staff allowed five walks with eighstrikeouts, while the OSU pitching staff walked none with 10 strikeouts.
Freshman Nolan Reimold had one of BGSU's six hits to extend his hitting streak to a career-high seven games. He has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games.
It was the eighth shutout of the season for the Buckeyes and extended their scoreless-inning streak to 36 innings vs. Wednesday night opponents.
The Falcons dropped to 13-20 overall while OSU improved to 28-12. BGSU hosts Western Michigan for four games this weekend (May 2-4) at Warren Steller Field.
