Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green swept a doubleheader from Oakland University at a cold, windy Warren Steller Field on Sunday afternoon, 4-0 and 6-2. The two teams had a doubleheader cancelled yesterday at Steller Field.
The sweep improved BGSU's current win streak to a season-high four games and improved its record to 8-11 overall.
In game one, junior right-hander Kyle Knoblauch (2-2) pitched his first complete-game shutout since May 5, 2001, in a 4-0 Falcon win. Knoblauch scattered four singles in nine innings of work while striking out seven and walking none. He faced just two batters over the minimum for the game (29), while facing the minimum over the final six innings (18). Knoblauch allowed runners in scoring position (second and third) just once, in the third inning.
BGSU got all the runs it would need in the first inning. Leadoff hitter David Barkholz reached on a bunt single, advanced to second on a wide throw by the second baseman, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Jimmy Lipari, and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. The other first-inning run came when Kelly Hunt singled to right field, scoring Nolan Reimold from second base.
Spencer Schmitz drove in a run in both the fourth inning (RBI single) and in the eighth inning (RBI sacrifice bunt) for the final 4-0 BGSU win. Hunt finished 3-for-4 at the plate while Barkholz and Schmitz each had two hits.
In game two, Oakland gained the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning off of a bases-loaded walk from Tyler Saneholtz to Ty Heriott. The Falcons responded, though, with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Two of the runs came on a double by Hunt, scoring Barkholz and Lipari. Nate Henschen drove in the third run on a bloop single down the right-field line, scoring Reimold. The Falcons left the bases loaded, but it didn't prove to haunt the home team.
BGSU scored again in the fifth inning (Reimold), seventh inning (Warnock), and eighth inning (Barkholz). Sophomore Tyler Saneholtz (2-1) got the start on the mound for BGSU and picked up the win, lasting five innings with four walks, six strikeouts, and giving up one run. Five different Falcons pitched in the final four innings.
The Falcons out-hit Oakland 21-10 in the two games, including 13-6 in game two. The Grizzlies had seven errors in the two games while BGSU was errorless. Oakland fell to 12-11 overall with the two losses.
BGSU is now 8-11 overall and travels to #19-ranked Notre Dame on Tuesday, April 8, for one game. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 EST. The Falcons travel to Central Michigan next weekend (April 12-13).
