BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's basketball head coach Curt Miller has announced that center Kelly Kapferer (Jefferson, Ohio/Jefferson Area) will rejoin the Falcon squad. Kapferer, who attended BGSU but did not play basketball in 2002-03, retains two years of eligibility.
"We are excited to welcome Kelly back to the program," said Miller. "At the time of her departure, at the completion of her sophomore year, she was playing as well as any young post player in the Mid-American Conference. She addresses our immediate need of size in the post.
"The addition of Kelly gives us nine players that did not play with the Falcons last year, and seven of those nine players are 5'10" or taller. Kelly certainly is a fine addition to our team. She has a chance to have a solid finish to her career."
Kapferer has earned a pair of letters for the Falcons to date. She played in all 29 of BGSU's games as a freshman in 2000-01, making four starts. That season, Kapferer averaged 3.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 13.6 minutes played, and finished third on the team with 13 blocked shots.
As a sophomore in 2001-02, Kapferer played in all 28 games, making 20 starts. She averaged 7.9 points and 4.5 rebounds, and led the team with a field-goal percentage of .455.
Kapferer had two of the finest games of her career in the Falcons' last two contests of 2001-02. She had a career-high 21 points in a win over Eastern Michigan, going 3-for-5 from three-point range en route to earning Mid-American Conference Player-of-the-Week honors. Then, in the first round of the MAC Tournament, Kapferer scored a team-high 16 points and added six rebounds in a narrow road loss to Ohio.
In her sophomore season, Kapferer had nine double-digit scoring games, and scored at least 10 points in each of the season's final three games. She had 10 rebounds three times, and recorded double-doubles against both Detroit and Yale.
With career totals of 322 points and 225 rebounds through her first two seasons, Kapferer ranks third in each category among players on the 2003-04 squad. She trails only rising seniors Lindsay Austin and Stefanie Wenzel on both lists.
The Falcons finished the 2002-03 season with a 12-16 overall mark, and BGSU was 5-11 in Mid-American Conference play.
