Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green split a doubleheader with Western Michigan on Saturday at Warren Steller Field, winning game one (4-2) and dropping game two (8-3). Kelly Hunt hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the first game for BGSU while WMU plated seven runs in the eighth inning of game two for the victory.
In game one, WMU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a run in the first and second innings off of BGSU starter Keith Laughlin. The Falcons cut the deficit to one in the fourth inning when Hunt scored on a groundout by Jeff Warnock. Hunt and Nolan Reimold began the inning with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position when Kevin Longstreth sacrificed the runners over.
The Falcons came right back in the fifth inning. David Barkholz hit a one-out triple to right-center field and scored to tie the game, 2-2, when Jimmy Lipari singled down the right field line. Hunt then gave the Falcons the lead, 4-2, with a two-run blast to left field. It was his sixth home run of the season and 42nd of his career, moving him to within three of the all-time leader at BGSU, Andy Tracy (45).
After Laughlin gave up a leadoff single to Tony Scheffler in the seventh inning, closer Neil Schmitz entered the game. Matt Bolton singled to right field, but Schmitz struckout two of the final three batters he faced to secure his fourth save of the season.
Hunt and Barkholz finished 3-for-3 while Lipari and Nolan Reimold had the other two hits for the Falcons. Reimold's hit extended his hitting streak to nine games. Laughlin improved his record to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in Mid-American Conference play while tying a career-high with nine strikeouts. Pat Misch (3-2) suffered the loss for WMU.
In game two, WMU again took the early lead with a run in the second inning. BGSU answered with a run in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead. Jesse Sobol drove in Jeff Warnock from third base in the fourth inning with a single down the left-field line. Nate Henschen doubled home Kelly Hunt in the fifth inning after Hunt reached on a double of his own.
BGSU added what appeared to be an insurance run in the seventh inning when Reimold hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Jimmy Lipari from third base for a 3-1 Falcon lead.
However, the Broncos plated seven runs in the top of the eighth inning thanks to six hits and two walks. BGSU used four different pitchers in the eighth frame. The Falcons were retired in order in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Freshman Tyler Johnson (1-3) suffered the loss for BGSU while J.R. Mathes (2-3) picked up the win for WMU. WMU had nine hits while BGSU had six hits. Six different Falcons had hits in the loss. Reimold's career-long hitting streak came to an end at nine games (0-for-1, two walks).
BGSU's record now stands at 14-22 overall and 7-12 in the MAC while WMU is now 21-21 overall and 14-9 in the MAC.
The two teams conclude the four-game series on Sunday, May 4, with one game beginning at 1 p.m. at Warren Steller Field.
