The Falcons' season begins with three weekend tournaments, capped by the BGSU Invitational at Anderson on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 12-13. The Brown and Orange will host Iowa State, Murray State and West Virginia in that round-robin event, with four matches set for Friday and two for Saturday.
BGSU's other tournament action will take place at Boise State (Aug. 29-30) and Bradley (Sept. 5-6). In other non-conference play, the Falcons will host IPFW, Oakland and Valparaiso, while BG will travel to face Cleveland State and Ohio State. The Falcons will face OSU in Columbus on Sept. 20, the same date the schools will meet in football.
The Falcons will play a total of eight matches against teams that won 20 or more matches a year ago.
BGSU's 16-match Mid-American Conference slate begins with a home contest vs. Western Michigan on Sept. 27. The Falcons will play two matches apiece vs. West Division rivals Central Michigan, Northern Illinois, Toledo and WMU. BG will meet divisional foes Ball State and Eastern Michigan once each, hosting BSU and heading to EMU.
The Falcons will face each East Division team once, with home contests vs. Akron, Kent State and Miami, and road tilts vs. Buffalo, Marshall and Ohio.
All 13 teams will qualify for the MAC Tournament in 2003. The tourney begins on Tuesday, Nov. 18, with the top-three seeds earning first-round byes (similar to the MAC Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments). The fourth- through eighth-seeded teams will host first-round contests.
Then, the five winners will join the top-three teams for quarterfinal-round action on Friday, Nov. 21, in Muncie, Ind., on the Ball State campus. Ball State will also host the semifinals (Nov. 22) and championship (Nov. 23) at Worthen Arena.
BGSU posted an overall record of 9-21 last season and went 4-14 in MAC play. Prior to 2002, the Falcons had recorded three consecutive 21-win seasons.
