Bowling Green, Ohio - Four members of the Bowling Green State University women's golf team have been recognized by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) as Academic All-Americans. Those student-athletes are Shelley Binzel (Dublin, Ohio), Stephanie Elsea (Worthington, Ohio), Kari Evans (Louisville, Ky.), and Jenny Schnipke (Kalida, Ohio).
There were 297 women's collegiate golfers from Divisions I, II and III who were tabbed with this prestigious honor. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 (3.40 for seniors) and student-athletes must have competed in at least 66 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
BGSU was one of just nine Division I schools with four or more golfers named Academic All-Americans.
This is the third time that Binzel and Elsea have been tabbed Academic All-Americans by the NGCA. It marks the second time for Schnipke and first time for Evans.
* Binzel finished tied for 15th at the 2003 MAC Championship, the third time in four years that she finished among the top-15 at the MAC Tournament. She won the 2002 Lady Falcon Invitational and broke her own school-record for 36 holes (148), and finished tied for second at the WMU Bronco Invitational with a score of 154. The recent BGSU graduate led the 2003 team with a 78.35 average in 23 rounds of golf, breaking her own school record for best season average set in 2002 (79.82). She was named All-MAC second-team for the third time in her career, in addition to being tabbed Verizon Academic All-District IV third-team and MAC All-Academic first-team. Binzel finished with the lowest career average in BGSU history (80.33 avg. in 91 rounds) and a 3.77 GPA with a degree in marketing.
* Elsea also graduated this past May with a GPA of 3.70 in accounting. In 2003, she finished 34th at the MAC Championship with a score of 252. She tied for 24th place at Bronco Invitational held at Western Michigan with a score of 168 and had three top-20 finishes on the year. She shot a career-low 75 in the second round of the season at Ball State, finishing T-20th (155).
* Evans holds a 3.71 GPA in integrated language arts. She played in 15 rounds this past season, finishing with a 88.06 average. The Louisville, Ky., native will be a senior next season for the Falcons.
* Schnipke currently holds 3.45 GPA as a pre-exercise specialist major. She finished tied for 26th at this year's MAC Championship with a score of 245. On Oct. 12, Schnipke won her first individual medal at the Eastern Kentucky Fall Invitational, establishing a new school record for 36 holes (145). She also tied the one-round BGSU record held by Ingrid Lundblad set in 1987 (70). Schnipke also had a third-place finish at the Falcon Invitational (152) and tied for 5th at the Cardinal Classic (150). She finished second on the team with a 79.17 average for the season.
