DEFENDING THEIR TURF
The Falcons enter the 2003 season having won seven games in a row since the end of the 2001 season. In those, seven wins, BGSU has averaged 52.7 points per game in front of the home fans. In addition, senior quarterback Josh Harris is 8-0 as a starter at Doyt Perry Stadium.
OPENING AT HOME
The Falcons will open their season at home in back-to-back years for the first time since BGSU played its season opener at Perry Stadium three consecutive years from 1990-92. Last year, BGSU defeated Tennessee Tech 41-7 in its season opener. Since 1970, BGSU is 8-1 when it opens its season at home, losing only to Louisiana Teach, 28-21 in 1995.
CENTER OF ATTENTION
Junior Scott Mruczkowski, who started the last 23 games at left guard for the Falcons has moved to the center position.
TRUE FRESHMEN
Defensive end Devon Parks is the lone true freshman listed as a starter Over the past three years, the following players have played key roles as true freshman:
2000: QB/RB/KR Josh Harris, CB Janssen Patton, DB Jason Morton.
2001: DB T. J. Carswell, WR James Hawkins, WR Cole Magner, DB Keon Newson, LB Daniel Sayles.
2002: DB Jelani Jordan, RB P.J. Pope, WR Kenneth Brantley, TE Steve Navarro, DL Matt Leininger, LB Ted Piepkow, LB Jamien Johnson, DL Monty Cooley, DB Terrill Mayberry, DB Tim Arnold.
Other true freshmen who could see playing time right away are linebacker Jenkins Reese, linebacker/running back Dan Macon and wide receiver Justin Martin.
SPEAKING OF MARTIN
Martin (5-10, 172) joined the Falcons as a walk-on this summer and has moved into a backup spot at wide receiver behind Cole Magner. Martin, a 2003 graduate of Clyde High School, was a three-time All-Sandusky Bay County selection despite playing only three games as a junior (broken clavicle) and four as a senior (bruised fibula and sprained ankle).
"I think it happens every year somewhere during camp- A kid walks-on and is a dynamic player," said BGSU Coach Gregg Brandon. "You have to understand that he was a kid we were recruiting and he got hurt. He had the opportunity to go to some Division II schools but Coach Beckman stayed on him and got him to walk-on because he wanted to go to school here.
POWELL IN A SNAP
Another area player, senior Gavin Powell, is currently listed as the top long snapper. "He's been more consistent and that is what you need from your long snapper," added Brandon. Powell is a 2000 graduate of Defiance High School.
