Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball squad travels to Peoria, Illinois, this weekend (Sept. 5-6) to compete in the Mark Twain Hotel Invitational hosted by Bradley University. The Falcons will compete against Bradley on Friday and UMBC and Eastern Illinois on Saturday.
The Falcons (2-1) are coming off a tournament victory in the Boise Invitational last weekend. BGSU defeated Portland State and Utah Valley State after falling to Boise State in the opening match.
Senior Samantha Rennau and junior Taylor Twite were named to the all tournament team. In her final two matches Rennau had 37 kills and 14 digs, while Twite had 56 kills in the three matches to go along with a .495 hitting percentage.
A BRIEF LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
Bradley (0-3) is coming off its third consecutive loss to open the 2003 season, falling in three games (33-31, 30-16, 30-15) to Colorado State in the final match at the 18th annual University Plaza Holiday Inn Classic in Fort Collins, Colorado. Bradley also dropped matches to #4 Stanford and Florida A&M in the tournament.
UMBC evened its record at 2-2 with a 3-0 win at Coppin State, cruising to a, 30-14, 30-18, 30-10 win. Freshman Jessie Folk led a balanced attack with 7 kills and a pair of blocks. Prior to the win over Coppin State, UMBC went 1-2 at the JU Invitational with a win over Jacksonville and losses to Xavier and Birmingham Southern.
Despite Erica Gerth's fourth straight double-double, the Eastern Illinois University (2-2) volleyball team lost in three games to Saint Louis, 24-30, 22-30, 28-30 Tuesday night in Lantz Arena. Gerth again paced the offensive attack, however SLU won for the eighth straight time in the series.
NORRIS SEARCHES FOR 1,000
With 32 kills at the Boise Invitational, senior Susie Norris now sits at 979 career kills, 21 short of 1,000. Norris would become the 12th Falcon in history to register 1,000 kills. Once Norris reaches 1,000 kills she will become the seventh Falcon in history to reach both 1,000 kills and digs.
A TOURNAMENT AT ANDERSON
Following the tournament at Peoria, the Falcons will host a tournament for the first time in three years and only the second time in over a decade. Iowa State, Murray State and West Virginia will come to Anderson Arena for the BGSU Invitational on Sept. 12-13. The Falcons won the most recent BGSU Invite, in 2000. Prior to that tourney, BGSU had last hosted a tourney in 1992.
