BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's basketball freshman Kim Nowakowski will sit out the 2003-04 season as a redshirt, head coach Curt Miller has announced. Nowakowski will retain four seasons of eligibility.
Nowakowski, a native of Butler, Pa., broke her foot over the summer, and reaggravated the injury in individual workouts at BGSU prior to the start of the 2003-04 season. She had surgery on Oct. 27, and only recently began practicing with the team.
Nowakowski, a three-year letterwinner at Butler Senior H.S., was a third-team all-state selection after averaging 16.6 points and 7.6 rebounds as a senior last winter. She was named one of the top-50 senior centers in the country by the All-Star Girls Basketball Report.
"We are disappointed that Kim's health hasn't returned to 100 percent since her surgery," said Miller. "But, due to her continuing rehabilitation, she and the program have decided that she will sit out this season.
"Kim will use the remainder of the 2003-04 season for increased strength and conditioning, and we are excited about getting her fully recovered for the 2004-05 season. We look forward to her making a huge impact next year as a redshirt freshman."
The Falcons, 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-American Conference, are home for a pair of games this week. BGSU will host the University of Akron in a Wednesday (Jan. 14) game, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena. The Falcons then face Central Michigan University Saturday (Jan. 17) in a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
