Fairbanks, Alaska - Alaska Fairbanks scored three unanswered goals over the final 22 minutes to snatch a victory from Bowling Green on Saturday night, 3-2, at the Carlson Center. The Falcons built a 2-0 lead in the second period.
UAF's Cam Keith scored the game-winner at 9:38 of the third period with the Nanooks' third power-play goal of the game.
The first period was physical and scoreless with UAF holding a 9-6 shot advantage. A scary moment came at 4:41 of the first period when UAF forward Aaron Voros, a former teammate of Jordan Sigalet's with the Victoria Salsa of the British Columbia Hockey League, crossed above the crease and errantly poked Sigalet in the throat area. Sigalet was down on the ice for several minutes before getting up, skating around, and returning to action.
Action picked up in the second period when the two teams combined for 25 shots on goal, including 18 from UAF. However, it was BGSU that took advantage of their shots the most. Brett Pilkington wristed a shot from the top left circle past goalie Keith Bartusch for a 1-0 lead at 8:41 of the second period. Rich Meloche and Mark Wires assisted on the goal. Then Steve Brudzewski drove to the net on a rush and poked the puck past Bartusch for a 2-0 Falcon lead at 13:49 of the second period. Kevin Bieksa and Ryan Minnabarriet assisted on the four-on-four goal. Ryan Lang scored UAF's first goal of the game at 18:41 of the second period to cut the Nanook deficit to 2-1.
The Nanooks knotted the game at 2-2 with a Voros PPG at 8:51 of the third period.
UAF held a 40-30 shot advantage, but the Falcons had a 17-13 edge in the final period. UAF finished 3-for-8 on the power play while BGSU was 0-for-4. Sigalet ended with a game-high 37 saves in 58:38 minutes of action and Bartush stopped 28.
BGSU falls to 7-13-6 overall and 5-10-3 in the league. UAF is now 12-12-0 overall and 11-9-0 in the CCHA. The Falcons return home next Saturday when they host Ohio State on Jan. 31 at the BGSU Ice Arena (7:05 p.m. faceoff).
