CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University women's basketball freshman Liz Honegger has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday (Jan. 5). Honegger earns the honor for the second time in her Falcon career, having picked up West Division P-O-W accolades on Dec. 15.
Honegger, a native of Lafayette, Ind., averaged 18.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocked shots per game as the Falcons went 3-0 with a trio of double-digit wins to end the non-conference schedule. She had the first two 20-point games of her young career last week, and set a school record with seven blocked shots in a 70-57 win at Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 29).
In that EKU game, Honegger had her first career double-double in that game (and, obviously, fell just three blocks shy of a triple-double), with 24 points and 10 rebounds. The next day (Dec. 30), she had nine points and seven boards in a 65-51 win over Morehead State to complete a 2-0 Falcon performance at the EKU Comfort Suites Classic.
Then, Honegger had 22 points and nine boards in the Falcons' home win over Cleveland State Saturday (Jan. 3), 82-67.
Honegger shot 10-of-14 from the field in the EKU game and was 9-of-12 vs. CSU. On the week, she shot .611 from the field, including a .500 (8-of-16) rate from three-point land.
This season, Honegger is averaging 11.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.7 blocks, and is shooting .548 from the field and .436 from beyond the arc.
The MAC honors one player from each of the two divisions each week. Miami's Colleen Day was this week's East Division Player of the Week.
The Falcons (7-4) of head coach Curt Miller open MAC play Wednesday night (Jan. 7), hosting defending West Division co-champion Ball State University. Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at BGSU's Anderson Arena.
