BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball schedule has been announced for the 2005 season. The Falcons of seventh-year head coach Leigh Ross-Shaw are slated to play in four spring tournaments before diving into the Mid-American Conference schedule in late March.
The Falcons are coming off a 2004 season which saw the team win the first Mid-American Conference Tournament in school history. BGSU finished 34-30 overall and 13-11 in MAC regular-season play, placing third in the West Division and earning the sixth seed for the conference tourney.
The 2005 season will mark the Falcons' third campaign in the MAC's West Division after five seasons in the league's East Division.
BGSU is slated to play in tournaments hosted by Tennessee Chattanooga (Feb. 25-27), Cal State Fullerton (March 4-6), UNLV (March 10-13) and Virginia (18-20). Following Virginia's Hoo's Who Tournament, the Falcons will return north to open both the home and conference portions of the schedule.
BGSU will begin conference play by hosting arch-rival Toledo in a doubleheader on Friday, March 25. That begins a six-game homestand which also sees the Brown and Orange face Detroit (March 29) and Michigan (March 30). The Falcons travelled to Ann Arbor twice last season, facing the Wolverines during the regular season, then heading to U-M for the NCAA Region 6 Championship after winning the MAC Tournament.
That six-game homestand is the Falcons' longest of the season, and kicks off a nine-date, 16-game slate at the BGSU Softball Field.
The Falcons are scheduled to play a three-game series against each of three West Division teams, including a home series with Eastern Michigan (April 16-17) and road swings to Northern Illinois (April 2-3) and Central Michigan (May 7-8). The latter series will close the regular season, and features the two MAC schools that advanced to NCAA Regional play in 2004.
The Brown and Orange will also play three games against Buffalo, hosting the Bulls on the final home weekend of the season (April 30-May 1). The Falcons will play doubleheaders against six other MAC foes, hosting Toledo and Miami (April 6) and travelling to Ball State (April 9), Akron (April 13), Western Michigan (April 20) and Ohio (April 23). The Falcons will play a non-conference game vs. Marshall of the MAC, on April 22 in Huntington, W.Va.
In addition to the aforementioned opponents, the Falcons will play non-conference games vs. Valparaiso (April 4), IPFW (April 10), Oakland (April 11) and Ohio State (April 27). The IPFW twinbill marks the lone home action among those games, while the Valpo date is a single game.
The MAC Tournament will be held at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio, on May 11-14. The Falcons will be looking to return to the league tournament for the third consecutive year and the sixth time in seven seasons.
Ross-Shaw and her assistant, Kyle Jamieson, welcome back 14 letterwinners from last season's team. That list includes eight of the nine positional starters from a year ago, as well as three of the four pitchers who saw action last spring.
