Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green dropped its home and league opener on Friday at the BGSU Ice Arena to visiting Lake Superior, 5-1. The Lakers scored three goals in the deciding second period for their first victory of the season (1-4-0, 1-0-0 CCHA). BGSU fell to 2-1-0 overall on the season and 0-1-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
LSSU's Kory Scoran put the visitors on the board first with a 5-on-3 power play goal at 8:21 of the first period. The score stayed 1-0 until BGSU freshman Jonathan Matsumoto scored his third goal in as many games to knot the game, 1-1, at 6:46 of the second period. Senior defenseman Taylor Christie garnered the assist.
However, the Lakers rattled off three unanswered goals in the remainder of the second period, including two by Nathan Ward (11:05 and 14:56) to pull ahead 4-1. Jon Booras added an insurance goal at 3:08 of the third period.
"Are defensive zone is where we lost that game in a stretch of four minutes," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch. "They did a better job of defending their net front than we did for the last 30 minutes of the game. We had good chances, we just didn't get the second chances.
"The guys in the lineup worked extremely hard for a good portion of that game. Our breakdowns were all D-zone. We need to bear down and get more loose pucks in their danger zone."
LSSU held a 33-28 shot advantage in the game, including 10-4 in the opening period. In the first period, BGSU held the Lakers to 1-for-5 on the power play as they finished 1-for-7 in the game with the man advantage. BGSU was 0-for-7 on the power play.
Laker goalie Jeff Jakaitis stopped 27 of 28 shots faced while BGSU's Jordan Sigalet allowed five goals on 33 shots faced.
BGSU and LSSU conclude their weekend series in a matinee affair on Saturday, Oct. 30, beginning at 2:35 p.m.
