BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Bowling Green State University volleyball head coach Denise Van De Walle has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Kaitlin Jackson, Chelsey Meek and Meghan Mohr will join the Falcons for the 2005-06 academic year.
"I couldn't be happier with this recruiting class," said Van De Walle. "They're all extremely bright and competitive. I wish they were with us now."
Jackson, a native of Toronto, Ontario, currently attends Richview Collegiate Institute. This fall, the 5-11 hitter was name volleyball MVP, as well as, Athlete of the Year for her school. She was also a gold medalist in the "Provincial Cup." While coached by Sue Pyke, she helped lead the Saints to a first-place finish in their league in 2004 and a second place finish in 2003.
"Kaitlin is a very gifted athlete," explained Van De Walle. "I happened to see Kaitlin last spring in Canada while recruiting her teammate. She was a complete unknown as she had only been playing with her club team a short amount of time. She stood out to me because she was able to hit both left and right handed with ease. You don't see that very often. Her excellent jumping ability and ambidexterity makes her a very unique player. She's a fiery competitor that pushes herself very hard. Once she learns the game a bit better at our level she will be awesome."
Meek, a native of Bowling Green, Ohio, currently attends Bowling Green High School. This fall the libero earned All-State Honorable Mention, as well as first-team All-League and All-District honors.
"I've known Chelsey for a long time and I'm so excited to have her in the program," said Van De Walle. "Bringing another BG High School player in will be great for the community. She is a very talented libero and will vie for playing time right away. Her enthusiastic personality and court demeanor will be fun to have on the floor every day. She gives it her all day in and day out. The fact that she made All-State in the libero position speaks volumes to me about the impact she can have on a team. So many times the all-state honors go to the "big hitters". She was an All-American last year at nationals with Meghan Mohr. They're both winners!"
Mohr, a native of Elida, Ohio, currently attends Elida High School. This fall, the outside-hitter averaged 20 kills a match, while finishing the season with 469 kills (fourth most in the state). She was a four-year letter-winner for Elida as she recorded 1,014 career kills, including an Ohio record of 42 kills in a single match this year. She is only the eighth player in the state to surpass the 1,000-kill plateau. Mohr was named to the first-team All-District and WBL Team, as well as 2004 USAV National Champion as she competed for the Premier Club program. The Elida native was selected as one of Prep Volleyball's top 350 recruits for 2005.
" I got a verbal commitment out of Meghan last March and felt that I got the steal of the century," said Van De Walle. "She can play anywhere and she picked BG. Meghan is the first left-handed player I've recruited in a long time. She is an excellent attacker and hits a very heavy ball. She is the type of player that should come in and make an impact right away. She is a program maker. I've seen her hit the ball so hard that kids duck out of the way. The fact that she was an ALL-American and the MVP of the 2004 Nationals last year says a lot about the kind of player she is. I can't wait to have her in the gym. "
The Falcons are currently 15-12 overall and 7-7 in the MAC. They play host to Marshall and Buffalo this weekend.
