COLUMBUS, Ohio - Host Ohio State University broke open a scoreless halftime tie with a pair of goals eight minutes apart, and the sixth-seeded Buckeyes moved on to a 2-0 win over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Friday night (Nov. 12). The NCAA Tournament first-round match was held at OSU's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 17-3-3 on the season, and advance to face the University of Detroit Mercy in Sunday's (Nov. 14) second round. The Titans were a 3-2 winner over the University of Michigan in Friday's first match.
The Falcons, who were making the first national tourney appearance in the eight-year history of the program, end the season with an overall record of 10-12-2.
The host Buckeyes, ranked eighth in the latest national poll, outshot the Falcons by a 17-1 margin in the first half. But, six saves by redshirt junior Ali Shingler, plus a pair of blocks by junior Julie Trundle on back-to-back OSU shots, kept the hosts off the scoreboard in the opening 45 minutes.
In that first half, Shingler made a tough stop on a shot by Danielle Dietrich with just over four minutes gone, then punched away a Lisa Grubb shot several minutes later.
With 16 minutes left in the half, an OSU flurry was unsuccessful, thanks to a pair of stops by Trundle just in front of the BGSU goal line. The teams went to the half without a goal.
But, the Buckeyes finally broke through with just over nine minutes gone in the second half. Lara Dickenmann, the 2004 Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year, played a ball into the box from the right side. The pass found Dietrich, who settled the ball, whirled and fired the ball into the lower right corner of the goal. Dickenmann drew the lone assist on the goal, which came at the 54:15 mark.
Approximately nine minutes later, Dickenmann made a long run into the box, deked a Falcon defender and deposited the ball into the lower right corner of the net to double the Buckeye lead at 62:57.
The Falcons' best chance came off the foot of senior Katie Piening. She took an entry pass from the right side and fired a shot, but OSU `keeper Emily Haynam, charging at Piening, was able to make a diving stop and deflect the ball out of bounds for a Falcon corner kick.
For the match, the Buckeye held a 34-5 advantage in shots, and had 13 shots on goal to the Falcons' four. Haynam made four saves to earn the shutout, while Shingler finished with nine stops. "Obviously, we're disappointed with the loss, but I couldn't be more proud of the girls," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "They put up a great performance, and I think they did Bowling Green State University proud tonight. We're disappointed with the loss, but I think we all realize that we lost to the better team tonight."
The match marked the final collegiate contest for BGSU's seven-member senior class. Seniors Jenny Berlovan, Katie Piening, Nikki Pucillo and team captain Beth Rieman all saw action in the match. Kristy Coppes, Jenifer Kernahan and Kylene Newell round out the senior class for the Brown and Orange.
