BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball program has inked a pair of student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, head coach Leigh Ross-Shaw has announced. Ohio natives Desiree Miller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington H.S.) and Hayley Wiemer (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) will join the Falcons for the 2005-06 academic year.
"Desiree and Hayley are going to be very strong additions to this program," said Ross-Shaw. "Both are great athletes and very versatile players. They also are good students and great competitors."
Miller, primarily a catcher, is in her senior season at Marlington H.S. in Alliance, Ohio. She also has extensive summer-ball experience, having played for over a decade with the Ohio Maddogs.
Miller earned All-Northwestern Buckeye Confererence First-Team honors in both her freshman and sophomore seasons, before missing her junior year due to injury. She is also a two-time All-Northeast Ohio Second-Team pick.
"Desiree is considered to be one of the best catchers in the state," said Ross-Shaw. "She has so many years of playing experience with one of the top travel teams in Ohio. She missed the last high-school season due to her injury, but has worked even harder since that time. Desiree is confident, skillful and positive, and is a good leader behind the plate."
Wiemer, primarily a pitcher, earned All-Ohio First-Team honors as the Arrows won the 2004 state championship. She set school records for earned-run average (0.17) and strikeouts (256), as well as homers (9) and batting average (.447) at the plate.
Wiemer is also a member of the St. Ursula volleyball team, and recently helped the Arrows to a perfect 29-0 record and a state title in that sport. Since transferring to St. Ursula prior to her junior year, Wiemer has played on teams with a combined record of 19-1 in state tournament action. She has played summer ball for Team Coca-Cola, helping that team to the 2004 16 and Under USSSA national championship.
"I was so excited to find a local player of Hayley's caliber," said Ross-Shaw. "She is a very successful pitcher and all-around athlete. Physically, we feel she can impact the program immediately, both on the mound and at the plate. But, we are even happier about all the intangibles she will bring. Hayley is a true competitor and team player."
The Falcons finished the 2004 season with an overall record of 34-30, and BGSU had a Mid-American Conference record of 13-11, good enough to advance to the MAC Tournament for the sixth time in seven years. The sixth-seed Falcons won that tournament for the first time in school history, earning a trip to NCAA Regional play.
The 2005 edition of the Falcons features just one senior, Kristen Anderson, on the 19-woman roster.
