KENT, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team dropped their fourth consecutive match Saturday night, this time falling in four (30-32, 17-30, 30-26, 20-30) to Kent State inside the MAC Center. With the loss the Falcons now stand at 13-12 overall and 6-7 in Mid-American Conference action.
Game one was an offensive barrage as BGSU poured out 16 kills and hit a .268, while KSU pounded out 18 kills and hit a .256, but after a back-and-forth opening match, the Falcons looked to be in control of game one at 23-17. The Flashes closed to within one at 29-28 and scored four of the next five points behind two KSU kills and two Falcon errors to steal game one, 32-30.
"We just gave away game one," said head coach Denise Van De Walle. "After that I felt as if we just played in shock."
BGSU (13-12, 6-7 MAC) was unable to get on track in game two following the heart-breaking game one loss as the Flashes stormed out to a 16-10 advantage. Kent State (9-12, 6-8) hit .562 in game two en route to a 30-17 game two victory.
The BGSU offensive finally got into a rhythm in game three. They hit a game-high .343 and registered 16 kills following the ten-minute intermission. A 4-0 spurt gave BGSU their first substantial lead since early in game one at 20-16. Kent State got as close a 27-26, but kills by Melissa Mohr and Maggie Karges combined with a KSU attack error game the Falcons a 30-26 game three win.
"We finally got energized in the third game," said Van De Walle. "It was exactly like the first game, but this time we were able to finish it."
But their was to be no comeback as the Flashes got on the Falcons early with a 13-9 lead and extended their advantage with a 7-0 run for a 20-9 swing opening game four. KSU walked home with game four 30-20.
The seniors led the way for the Falcons offensively with Taylor Twite (15), Mohr (9) and Amber Mareski (8) finishing tops on the team. Freshmen Stephanie Swiger (8) and Karges (7) also chipped in.
Freshman Chrissy Gothke seems to have found her game as of late, this time posted a game-high 22 digs, and has recorded 50 digs in the last two matches combined (5.5 digs per game). Junior Emily Manser was second on the team with 12 digs.
The Falcons return to action tomorrow afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. shown down with the University of Akron Zips.
