MAC Regular Season Hits Final Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will conclude their regular season this week with three matches. They travel to Oakland (Nov. 10), before returning home for MAC matches with Marshall (Nov. 12) and Buffalo (Nov. 13). All three matches are slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.

FALCONS GET BACK ON WINNING TRACK
The Falcons snapped a four match losing streak on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep over Akron. In the win Chrissy Gothke recorded a career-high 31 digs (10.33/game) in only three matches. Her previous best 30 digs was set versus Eastern Michigan last season in four games.
Senior Captain Melissa Mohr was the sole Falcon in double-figures with 12 kills, but a total of 10 Falcons posted their name on the kills list. Stephanie Swiger (8), Maggie Karges (8), Taylor Twite (8) and Amber Mareski (7) led the team offensively.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
Wednesday night the Falcons will make their final road trip, as they will hit the road for a 7:00 p.m. showdown with Oakland. They are led by Heather Lippert, who averages 2.72 kills and 1.22 blocks per game.
Friday night the Falcons will welcome the Marshall Thundering Herd (19-9, 10-4 MAC) to Anderson Arena. Marshall is led by Kelly-Anne Billingy. She averages 5.58 kills and 2.33 digs per game. Her 5.58 kills are second in the conference.
The following night the Falcons will celebrate Senior Day, as they will play host to Buffalo (8-19, 1-13). Amber Mareski, Melissa Mohr and Taylor Twite will be participating in their final regular season match as a Falcon.
The Bulls recorded their first MAC win of the season over the past week with a 3-2 win over Miami.
UB is led by Nikki Morzenti, who is averaging 2.97 kills and 2.18 digs per game.
WHAT A WEEKEND
Sophomore Chrissy Gothke had a
career weekend. In the two matches this weekend she recorded 53 digs. On Saturday night she posted 22 digs, had four assists and a service ace in the four game match versus Kent State, but one upped herself the following day. On Sunday afternoon the sophomore libero registered a career-high 31 digs (10.33/game), two kills and four assists. Over the week she averaged 7.57 digs, .29 kills, 1.14 assists and .14 services aces per game.
MAC TOURNAMENT REACHING CLOSER
If the season ended today the BGSU volleyball team would be seeded sixth and play host to the University of Akron on Tuesday, Nov. 16, before hosting the remaining eight teams from Nov. 19-21 for the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Though seeded sixth at this moment the Falcons can finish as high as fifth and as low as ninth. One win this weekend over Marshall or Buffalo guarantees a home win for the Falcons in the MAC Tournament First Round.
FALCONS IN THE MAC
With 12.26 assists per game, Amber Mareski ranks fourth in the MAC. She has 1128 assists on the season.
Melissa Mohr ranks seventh in the MAC in blocks per game with 1.17. She has 17 solo blocks and 92 block-assists on the season. Mohr also ranks sixth in the MAC with .38 aces/ game.
Taylor Twite ranks 12th in kills per game with 3.60 as well as 12th in hitting percentage with a .295
FRESHMAN CONTINUE TO HAVE LARGE ROLE
For most of the 2004 season the BGSU volleyball team has had to count on new faces on the court. This year four freshman Falcons have played tremendous roles throughout the season. Maggie Karges is third on the team with 216 kills and 260 digs. Stephanie Swiger owns 193 kills and is third on the team with a .262 hitting percentage. Elizabeth Simon has shared duties at the libero position and is averaging 2.51 digs per game. Red-shirt freshman Corrie Mills even earned an All-Tournament Team nomination at the Wright State Invitational earlier this year.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Amber Mareski
Amber Mareski will leave her mark on the BGSU program for many years. The senior from St. Clair, Michigan will finish her career in the top five on the career assist mark, as well as assists per game for a career. For her career she has recorded 3,061 assists (4th all time) and averages 10.07 assists per game in her three year Falcon career. Her 12.26 assists/game this season would rank third in school history if the season ended today.
Mareski owns a career-high 69 assists for one match, which she set back in 2002 in a match with Ohio, as well as a career-best 18 digs and seven kills, which she set at last years MAC Tournament.
Mareski is majoring in music education and currently maintains a 3.67 GPA.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Melissa Mohr
Melissa Mohr will finish her career as one of the top defensive players, blocking wise, in Falcon history. The senior middle blocker recorded 23 solo and 97 block assists in 2003, while averaging 1.03 block per game. In her final year in the Brown & Orange she increased those marks to 1.18 blocks per game with 17 solo and 93 assists.
Her 1.18 blocks per game this season ranks 13th all-time in the BGSU record books, while her 238 career blocks also ranks 13th all-time.
The Millersburg, Ohio, native was named the West Virginia Invitational Tournament MVP as she led the Falcons to a 4-0 record over the weekend. She owns 509 career kills, including a career-high 17 vs. Toledo last season.
Mohr is majoring in Interior Design and currently maintains a 3.87 GPA.
SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Taylor Twite
Taylor Twite has been an offensive force for the Falcons for nearly the past two seasons. In 2003 she recorded 460 kills, the most ever by a Falcon junior. She was named MAC Honorable Mention by the Mid-American Conference, as well as being named Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year for the Falcons. Her 460 kills in 2003 ranked 10th all-time for kills in a season.
At this current time she has 874 career kills, which ranks 13th in school history. She also ranks sixth in the BGSU record books with a .278 hitting percentage for her career.
The Lapeer, Michigan, native owns a career-high 26 kills, hit a blistering .636 (22-1-33) in a win over Portland in `03, and has a career-high nine total blocks versus Bradley.
Twite is majoring in middle childhood education and maintains a 3.72 GPA.
