BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team used a big first-half run to break open the game, and the Falcons went on to a 99-58 win over the Premier All-Stars Monday night (Nov. 8). The game, the Falcons' lone exhibition of the 2004-05 season, was held at Anderson Arena.
Freshman Kate Achter paced four Falcon double-digit scorers with 19 points off the bench, while classmate Whitney Taylor and sophomore Liz Honegger each had 15 points. Soph Megan Thorburn had 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Falcons led, 16-13, when a Casey McDowell three-point field goal ignited a 21-4 run. The All-Stars still were within eight points, at 25-17, when BGSU scored the next 12 points. Achter scored seven points during that run, and also threaded the needle with a pass from halfcourt that found sophomore Amber Flynn for an easy layup.
Taylor, who had started the game with a three-point play, made a triple during that 12-0 run, and the Falcons ended the half by scoring 38 of the next 47 points to take a 54-22 lead at the intermission.
The Falcons shot 52.8 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, while holding the All-Stars to just a 25.8% shooting rate from the floor.
Taylor hit another triple to open the second half, and the game never was closer than 33 points after that. Lisa Cline led the All-Stars with 17 points, while Tomeka Brown added 14.
The Falcons held a whopping 60-29 rebounding advantage in the contest, and BGSU pulled down 21 offensive boards.
BGSU got 40 points from players off the bench, to the visitors' six. The Falcons also held advantages in second-chance points (22-4), fast break points (27-8) and points in the paint (40-22).
For the game, the Falcons shot 45.9% from the field, and held the All-Stars to a 32.8% rate. BGSU was a perfect 20-of-20 from the free-throw line, and the Falcons made 11 three-point field goals in 26 attempts (42.3%).
Honegger made 6-of-7 shots from the field, including all three of her triple tries, and scored her 15 points in just 14 minutes of play. She had 11 points (including all three treys) in the game's first 5:34.
Head coach Curt Miller's players all played between nine and 21 minutes in the game.
"We wanted to play everybody, and try to get everyone double-digit minutes," said Miller. "And, we very nearly accomplished that. I wanted to look at different combinations, try different people on the floor, and we got that accomplished.
"This team (Premier All-Stars) is a collection of tremendous players, most of whom played at Ohio State. It was important to us to play well and beat that team, to give us a little confidence heading into the game at Ohio State."
The Falcons now set their sights on that game, Friday's (Nov. 12) regular-season opener at OSU. The game, a first-round contest in the Sportsview.tv WNIT, begins at 7:00 p.m. at Value City Arena in Columbus.
