KATE IS EIGHT-FOR-EIGHT
Freshman Kate Achter had the finest game of her young Falcon career Tuesday (Nov. 30), scoring a game-high 23 points in BG's win over Youngstown State ... Achter was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field in the win ... that shooting performance was the finest by a Falcon since Michelle Terry's school-record 11-for-11 game nearly nine years ago (at Eastern Michigan; Feb. 14, 1996).
ROAD WARRIORS
As mentioned earlier, BGSU will not play at Anderson Arena again for exactly one month (Dec. 30 vs. Bucknell) ... in fact, when the Falcons leave for Providence, R.I., on Friday morning (Dec. 3), it will mark the start of a 17-day stretch in which the team will spend nine nights on the road ... BGSU will play in tourneys at Brown and New Mexico on back-to-back weekends, then will spend the following weekend in Western Pennsylvania to take on St. Francis (Dec. 18) and Robert Morris (Dec. 20).
IT'S (IN-SEASON) TOURNEY TIME
The Falcons posted a 2-0 record in last season's EKU Comfort Suites Classic, picking up wins over host Eastern Kentucky (70-57; Dec. 29, 2003) and Morehead State (65-51; Dec. 30, 2003) ... that marked the first time BGSU had gone undefeated in an in-season tourney setting in 15 years ... on Dec. 2-3, 1988, the Brown and Orange downed Villanova and Iowa State to win the Illini Classic ... that 1988 tourney is the last time the Falcons have won an in-season championship game, as the EKU Comfort Suites Classic featured predetermined matchups on each day (Georgia, the fourth team in the classic, matched the Falcons' 2-0 mark) ... since the Illini Classic, BGSU teams had gone 1-1 in 16 different in-season tournaments, 2-1 in one tourney and 0-2 three times, prior to the 2-0 record last December ... it should be noted, however, that the Falcons won the MAC Tournament four times during that span.
FALCONS ON RADIO FOR AT LEAST 26 GAMES
A total of 25 of the Falcons' 27 regular-season games, plus all postseason action, are scheduled to be on the air in 2004-05 ... student station WBGU-FM (88.1), the flagship station for the women's basketball Falcons, is scheduled to air all but two regular-season contests; next weekend's two games at the Lobo Shootout (Dec. 10-11) ... the 2004-05 academic year marks the third season of an agreement between the BGSU department of athletics and the Bowling Green Radio Sports Organization (BGRSO) to have WBGU serve as the flagship station for both hockey and women's basketball ... games produced by BGRSO can be heard on the web, both at bgrso.org and via the Real One Package available through BGSUFalcons.com.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons will take a 2-2 overall record to Rhode Island, after a 22-point victory over Youngstown State, 83-61, in Tuesday's (Nov. 30) home opener ... after suffering an 89-41 loss at nationally-ranked Ohio State (Nov. 12) to open the season, BGSU rebounded for a 115-84 victory at IPFW a week later (Nov. 19) ... but, the Brown and Orange fell at Duquesne by a 68-63 count last Saturday evening (Nov. 27) ... the OSU game was a first-round contest in the Sportsview.tv WNIT ... three sophomores and a freshman comprise the Falcons' top-four scorers, and all have double-digit averages ... soph Liz Honegger paces the Brown and Orange in scoring (13.8 ppg), as well as rebounding (9.5), steals (2.5) and blocks (2.0) ... classmate Ali Mann has 12.5 points and 7.8 boards per game, while freshman Kate Achter is averaging 10.8 points and 3.5 assists per outing ... BGSU ended the 2003-04 season with a record of 21-10, and the Falcons finished the MAC campaign with an 11-5 slate ... BG tied for second in the West Division, then posted a pair of buzzer-beating wins in the league tourney to advance to the championship game ... head coach Curt Miller welcomes back 11 letterwinners, including three starters, from that team ... the returning starters, all sophomores, are Honegger, Mann and Thorburn ... Miller's team includes three seniors in Kelly Kapferer, Lewis and Sakima Smith ... a pair of juniors, Jill Lause and McDowell, also return ... in addition to the three returning starters, the sophomore class consists of Amber Flynn, Julie Gompers and Horne ... two freshmen, guards Achter and Whitney Taylor, round out the Falcon squad.
SCOUTING LEHIGH
Lehigh will enter the Brown Classic with an overall record of 3-1 ... the Mountain Hawks picked up a 68-66 win at St. Joseph's on Monday night (Nov. 29) ... LU also has wins over UNC-Asheville and Princeton to date, and the team's only loss came on the road against MAC member Marshall, 68-66 on Nov. 20 ... senior F/C Jessica DePalo has averaged 18.8 points for head coach Sue Troyan, and scored her 1,000th career point at St. Joseph's, with a game-high 28 in that game ... sophomore guard Sara Ellis has 13.3 points, including a team-high 11 three-point field goals, while sophomore guard Adrienne Blount is averaging 7.5 points off the bench ... senior guards Mary Frances Hynoski (6.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and Chantal St. Laurent (3.0 ppg) and junior forward Jenny Callen (6.0 ppg) join DePalo and Ellis in Troyan's probable starting lineup ... last year, the Mountain Hawks finished 13-16 overall, and placed third in the Patriot League with a 9-5 mark ... Troyan is 124-135 in her 10th season as head coach ... the school's athletics web site is www.lehighsports.com.
SCOUTING BROWN
Brown is 4-1 on the young season, after Wednesday's (Dec. 1) 66-65 home win over Rhode Island ... the Bears dropped the season opener to Temple, but have posted four-straight wins, including victories over Fairleigh Dickinson, Robert Morris and Binghamton ... the latter two games came at the Binghamton Time Warner Classic as Brown captured the title ... then, sophomore forward Lena McAfee's layup with two seconds left gave the Bears the win over URI ... senior center Holly Robertson leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, with 15.8 points and 11.0 boards per game, while junior guard Colleen Kelly has 14.6 points and a team-high 4.6 assists per outing ... junior guard Sarah Hayes has 10.4 points per contest ... senior forward Andrea Conrad (4.6 ppg) and McAfee (4.6 ppg) round out the probable starting lineup for 17th-year head coach Jean Marie Burr ... last season, the Bears were 16-11 overall and 9-5 in Ivy League, good for second place ... the school's athletics web site is www.brownbears.com.
SCOUTING WINTHROP

THE SERIES
The Falcons hold a 1-0 lead over Lehigh in the all-time series between the teams ... the only prior meeting also came in a tournament setting, as BGSU picked up a 63-55 win in the 2001 consolation game of the Gatorade Holiday Classic in Coral Gables, Fla. (Dec. 28, 2001) ... several players on the 2004-05 rosters of the Falcons and the Mountain Hawks participated in that game ... for Lehigh, Carli Toliver had 11 points, while Jessica DePalo added six and Kelly Berk scored five ... Mary Frances Hynoski and Chantel St. Laurent also saw action for the Mountain Hawks ... Tene Lewis had two points off the bench, while Sakima Smith had a pair of blocked shots in that BG win (the boxscore from that game is in the pdf version of this release).
FASCINATING (??) FALCON FACTS RE: BROWN CLASSIC
LAST TIME OUT
Freshman Kate Achter scored 23 points, the most of her brief career, as the Falcons opened the home slate with a convincing 83-61 win over Youngstown State Tuesday night (Nov. 30) ... three Falcon sophomores joined Achter in double digits, as Liz Honegger, Carin Horne and Ali Mann had 14 points apiece ... Honegger had a double-double, with a game-high 15 rebounds, and also had four blocked shots and three steals ... in addition to scoring, Achter paced all players in assists (five) and steals (four) in the game ... she was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field ... the contest was tied at 22-22 after YSU's Cathy Hanek drained a three-point field goal - the Penguins' sixth of the game -- with 9:02 left in the half ... but, that would be Youngstown's last field goal before the intermission ... a Mann jumper began a 14-0 BG run over the next six-and-a-half minutes, and the Falcons took a 41-27 advantage into the lockerroom ... the visitors got as close as nine points, 45-36, in the second half ... but, Horne responded by scoring the game's next five points, on a trey off a Mann feed and a driving, left-handed layup ... the lead never again fell into single digits ... the Falcons held a 38-35 rebounding advantage in the win ... for the Penguins, Barb Fabianova had 14 points, while Jen Perugini had 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
THAT'S AN ADVANTAGE
The Falcons held sizeable advantages in several categories in the Youngstown State game ... BGSU had a decisive 48-8 margin in points in the paint, including a 30-0 first-half advantage in that category ... BG's bench outscored the Penguin subs, 41-13, and the home team had 30 points off turnovers, to the visitors' nine.
SHARP-SHOOTING FALCONS
BGSU had a field-goal percentage of 52.5% in the win over YSU, the Falcons' best success rate of the young season ... BG now has shot at least 50 percent from the field twice in the first four games, matching the Falcons' total for all of last season.
DEFENSE!
The Falcons and Youngstown State were tied, 22-22, with 9:02 remaining in the first half of Tuesday's game ... from that point, however, the Brown and Orange held the Penguins without a field goal for the remainder of the half ... BGSU's defense forced the visitors to miss 11 shots and commit five turnovers during that 9:02 stretch.
UNSELFISH
No fewer than nine different BGSU players had at least one assist in the win over Youngstown ... that came two games after 10 different Falcons had an assist in the IPFW contest ... only three times during all of last season did as many as nine players each have an assist in the same game for the Brown and Orange.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR HONEGGER
Sophomore Liz Honegger had 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds in the YSU contest ... the double-double was BGSU's first of the season, and was the fifth of Honegger's career.
HONEGGER HITS THE BOARDS
Sophomore Liz Honegger grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds vs. the Penguins, just two away from her career best ... that came on the heels of a 13-rebound performance in the Duquesne contest ... Honegger now has 10 double-digit rebounding games in her career, the most among active Falcons (classmate Ali Mann has eight).
YOU THE MANN
Sophomore Ali Mann, the reigning Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, was held to four points in the first half of the Duquesne game ... but, she exploded for 19 of the Falcons' 31 second-half points ... Mann made six of her 10 second-half shots from the field, including her only three-point try, and also hit on 6-of-8 free-throw tries in the final 20 minutes of the game.
MANN SCORES IN DOUBLE DIGITS, AGAIN
Sophomore Ali Mann had a game-high 23 points at Duquesne, and followed that performance with 14 points (on 7-of-9) shooting vs. Youngstown ... Mann has scored 20 or more points seven times in her career, the most of any current Falcon, and has hit double digits in scoring 21 times in 35 career games.
TAKING CARE OF THE BALL
The Falcons' total of eight turnovers at Duquesne was BG's lowest in over a decade, since committing only seven in a win over Toledo on Jan. 13, 1993 ... believe it or not, that BG team had only seven turnovers in back-to-back games, having done the same thing in a win at Eastern Michigan on Jan. 9, 1993 ... three days after the Duquesne contest, the 2004-05 Falcons had only 11 turnovers against YSU.
YOUR BASIC 79-POINT TURNAROUND
After suffering a 48-point loss at nationally-ranked Ohio State to open the season, the Falcons rebounded for a 31-point victory at IPFW one week later ... the 89-41 loss to the Buckeyes was the sixth-most lopsided setback in BGSU history, in terms of margin ... the win over the Mastodons tied for the 36th-highest margin of victory in school history ... to put those rankings in perspective, the Falcons have played a total of 810 games since becoming a varsity program.
MORE NOTES FROM THE IPFW GAME
BLOCKING IT OUT
Liz Honegger, just a sophomore, is only four blocked shots away from moving into the top-five on that BGSU career list ... Honegger has 58 blocks in her Falcon tenure ... Michelle Terry (1994-97) holds down fifth place on the career list with 62 blocked shots.
THE LAST TIME...
BGSU, as mentioned, scored the most points in a game in nearly 13 years in the IPFW contest ... in that game, the Falcons put up some other numbers that hadn't been seen in quite some time ...
LEWIS DISHES 'EM OUT
Senior co-captain Tene Lewis shattered her career high for assists, dishing out 10 in the IPFW game ... her previous best had been six assists, reached on two occasions.
START ME UP
Redshirt junior Casey McDowell made the first start of her BGSU career in the IPFW game ... McDowell made a total of 20 starts as a true freshman at Indiana State in the 2001-02 season ... she sat out the 2002-03 campaign after transferring to BG, then came off the bench to play in 29 games last year ... McDowell has now started three consecutive games, having also been in the starting five at Duquesne and vs. Youngstown.
176 GAMES AND COUNTING
The Falcons have made at least one three-point field goal in every game during the past six-plus years ... in fact, BGSU has drained a triple in each of the last 176 games, a school record by far ... the last time the Falcons were held without a trey was on March 1, 1998 ... the previous school record had been 29-straight games on two occasions - most recently, in the 1993-94 (last five games) and 1994-95 (first 24 games) seasons.
BGSU-OHIO GAME PART OF MAC TV PACKAGE
The Falcons' home game vs. Ohio University, scheduled for Feb. 5, 2005, will be televised as part of the league's seven-game package on Fox Sports Net Ohio ... start time for the game has been moved to 2:00 p.m. ... this is a change from the previously published start time listed in the media guide and on schedule cards, posters and season ticket information ... Comcast Local will also air the game, with additional clearances possibly being announced at a later date.
START TIME CHANGED FOR WMU GAME
The starting time for the Falcons' game on Jan. 22, 2005, has been changed ... that game, vs. Western Michigan, has been moved to a 3:00 p.m. start at Anderson Arena ... the move sets up a Falcon basketball doubleheader that day ... the BGSU men's basketball team will host Toledo in a 6:00 p.m. game that is part of the MAC's television package for 2004-05.
