Hanover, N.H. - For the second night in a row Bowling Green attempted nearly 40 shots on net, but it wasn't enough as Providence defeated the Falcons, 3-2, in the consolation game of the 2004 Ledyard National Bank Classic in Hanover, N.H. Dartmouth was the host of the tournament.
On Wednesday night the Friars were defeated by #14 Vermont, 3-1, while BGSU lost in a shootout to host Dartmouth to set up the consolation matchup.
Ryan Minnabarriet gave the Falcons the early lead at 5:49 of the first period with his first goal of the season, a power-play tally. It was his first goal since March 4, 2004, at Western Michigan (18 games). Michael Hodgson and Mike Falk earned assists. Providence tied it up, 1-1, less than one minute later when Jon Rheault scored at 6:38, his sixth of the season. Then Jamie Carroll gave the Friars a lead, 2-1, at 12:31 that it would not surrender.
Colin McDonald increased the Friar lead to 3-1 at 9:45 of the second period. But the Falcons got to within one at 15:39 when sophomore James Unger stuffed home a shot past PC goalie David Cacciola. It was Unger's sixth of the season and was assisted by Steve Brudzewski and John Mazzei.
That was as close as the Falcons could get, though, despite ending with a 37-35 shot advantage for the game. BGSU was 1-for-5 on the power play while the Friars were held to 0-for-5.
"I thought we came out extremely hard," said BGSU Coach Scott Paluch, whose Falcons outshot PC 16-7 in the opening period. "It was probably as good as an offensive game we've had all year. We had some real good chances, their goalie made some terrific saves, as did Jon Horrell.
"The stretch we had when the game was 2-1 was a great stretch of hockey for us. We contained the play, cycled the puck, being creative. They're goalie did a great job. I thought our guys played hard."
Junior Jon Horrell got the start in net for the Falcons, his second start of the season. After allowing the two goals in the first period he played well, stopping 14 of 15 shots in the second period and all 13 he faced in the third period.
The Falcons can now return to concentrating on the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings as Thursday's game marked the final non-conference contest of the season. BGSU (8-7-3 overall, 5-5-2 CCHA) hosts Alaska Fairbanks for a two-game series next weekend, Jan. 7-8, in the BGSU Ice Arena. Both games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
