BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -
NIU Coach Carol Hammerle
"What a game. I've been coaching for over 30 years, and I can't remember ever playing a four-overtime game. It's unfortunate that somebody had to lose this game."
BGSU Coach Curt Miller
"Both teams could have won this game at multiple times, and both teams had chances to lose this game. Ironically, I thought each team was looser and played with no fear when trailing. Both teams, when leading in the final seconds of regulation and the overtimes, were trying to just hang on and win games, instead of getting that one big defensive stop. Both teams, though, played aggressively late in regulation and in the overtimes."
(NIU got 23 offensive rebounds; was that due to BGSU being fatigued?)
"They wore us down and got some big offensive rebounds. They played the same length of game as we did. Regardless of any fatigue, we talked about loose balls, rebounds -- the hustle stats. To their credit, I thought Northern had more hustle plays than we did."
"We made only one of 19 three-pointers in the first (NIU) game. Tonight, we began by making only one of our first 13. So, that's 2-for-32 from three-point range during that span. You have got to make more shots than that. Northern plays a sagging man-to-man defense, a name that doesn't do it justice. They sag, but they contest every shot. We came in with a game plan of getting the ball inside, but we were trigger-happy from the arc. Once we got the ball inside, we relaxed, got some open looks and hit some threes."
"I don't give our team enough credit, but you saw tonight that our regulars are in great shape, and can play a lot of minutes and get up and down the floor."
"It was an emotional rollercoaster. You thought the game was won numerous times, and you thought the game was lost. There were times when I thought we were going to get a big home win, and clinch (a) homecourt (berth for the MAC Tournament). But, to Northern's credit, they came in here and got a big win on the road."
"Our seniors did not shoot the ball well tonight, combining for only 25 percent. And, they would be the first to tell you that they did not shoot well. But, with them having shot only 6-for-24, I still would want the ball in their hands at the end of a close game, because you need your seniors to make plays. They struggled tonight, but they have made some big shots for us over the course of the season."
