CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bowling Green State University senior Lindsay Austin has earned the Mid-American Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week award, the conference office has announced. Austin, a guard on the Falcon women's basketball team, earns the honor for the second time this season, and the second time in her BGSU career.
Austin, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (Sycamore HS), was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team as the Falcons had a magical run through the league tourney. Austin, who was named the MAC's Defensive Player of the Year last Tuesday (March 9), had 11 points, eight rebounds and a game-high nine assists against Western Michigan the next day. In that game, she hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Falcons a 63-62 win in the quarterfinal round.
Two days later (March 12), Austin hit another buzzer-beater, as her 14-footer downed top-seeded Miami, 75-74, in the semifinals. That shot capped a game-ending, 9-0 run for the Falcons. She had 12 points against the RedHawks, and added 10 more in the Falcons' 65-56 loss to Eastern Michigan in the championship game. The last basket of that game gave her 1,000 career points, making her just the 18th player in school history to reach that plateau.
Also last week, Austin became the BGSU career steals leader, and finished her career with 244. Austin became only the fourth player in school history to surpass 500 career assists, and ended with 508. She is the only player in BGSU history to amass both 1,000 points and 500 assists in her tenure.
As if that weren't enough, Austin earned one more honor last week, being named to the All-MAC Team. She earned honorable mention to that squad.
Austin, a visual communication technology (VCT) major, currently maintains a 3.62 cumulative grade-point average.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the previous week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
The Falcons of head coach Curt Miller, the most-improved team in the MAC, ended the season with an overall record of 21-10. The total of 21 wins matches the combined total of the previous two seasons. BG finished MAC play with an 11-5 record, a complete reversal of last year's 5-11 league mark.
