MARIETTA, Ga. - The Bowling Green State University softball team spotted North Carolina State University a quick two runs before rallying for a 6-2 win Friday afternoon (March 19). BGSU used the long ball to rally for the win. The game was the teams' first in the Buzz Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-10, while dropping the Wolfpack to 11-15 on the season.
Sophomore Gina Rango and junior Kristen Anderson each homered in the win. Rango also doubled and scored three runs, while Anderson's homer was her team-leading third of the year.
The Wolfpack scored twice in the top of the first inning off senior Jody Johnson, with both runs unearned. N.C. State scored on a bases-loaded walk and an error.
BGSU cut the N.C. State lead in half with a run in the bottom of the first, then took the lead with a pair of third-inning runs. The Falcons scored three times in the fourth frame to close the scoring.
Rango scored BGSU's first-inning run. She reached on a one-out error, moved up on a walk and a fielder's choice, then scored on a bases-loaded walk to freshman Ashley Zirkle.
In the third inning, Rango led off with a double, and scored on Anderson's one-out blast, which gave BG the lead for good.
The next inning, Rango busted the game wide open. Marla Murphy had a walk, but was erased on a Jeanine Baca fielder's choice for the inning's second out. Sophomore Lindsay Heimrich singled to move Baca to second, and Rango followed with the three-run homer to give the Falcons a four-run lead.
Johnson did not allow a Wolfpack runner past first base over the last three innings. She picked up the complete-game win to improve to 4-2 on the year. Johnson allowed only a pair of unearned runs on four hits.
BGSU outhit the Wolfpack by a 7-4 margin, with Rango and Finkel each picking up a pair of hits.
The Falcons will return to the diamond Friday night, taking on Tulsa in a contest scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m.
