Bowling Green, Ohio - Bowling Green swept a doubleheader from Ball State on Saturday at Warren Stellar Field, taking both one-run games by the scores of 5-4 and 2-1. The first game was in place of Friday's game that was postponed due to rain. The doubleheader marked the beginning of the Mid-American Conference season for both teams.
Sophomore Nolan Reimold's single down the left-field line that plated redshirt junior Andy Hudak in the seventh inning proved to be the difference in the first of the two games. Reimold's only hit of the day gave the Falcons a 5-1 lead. However, Ball State would come back with a three-run home run by Lucas Fry off senior lefty Neil Schmitz in the top half of the eighth inning that cut the Falcon lead to 5-4. Schmitz would not allow another hit in the game and preserved the victory for the Falcons.
The scoring started in the first inning with two outs for BGSU when Hudak hit his first home run of the season to left field, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
With the score 1-1 in the sixth Falcon catcher Josh Stewart hit a single that drove in senior David Barkholz. The Falcons were not done there as shortstop Jimmy Lipari's two-run single down the right field line scored Stewart and Hudak, giving the Falcon's a 4-1 advantage.
The Falcons would get the insurance run they needed the following inning in Reimold's 14th RBI in 14 games this season.
Starting pitcher Tyler Saneholtz turned in 6.2 innings for the Falcons, allowing four hits, four walks, six strikeouts and only one earned run. Saneholtz improved to 3-0 this season and has a minuscule 0.38 earned run average in 23.2 innings of work thus far.
The Falcons would win a pitchers duel in the second game of the doubleheader behind a strong performance by starting pitcher Tyler Johnson. Johnson pitched 7.1 innings yielding six hits, two walks, four strikeouts and no earned runs. He also improved to 3-0 on the season with a 0.40 earned run average.
Ball State broke the scoreless tie in the fifth when Fry scored on a Matt Singleton ground out to second baseman Eric Lawson. The key hit for the Falcons came in the sixth inning when designated hitter Steve Raszka drove in Lawson and Hudak with a single to right field. The 2-1 lead would be the final score of the contest.
Ball State fell to 9-10 while Bowling Green improved to 11-3 overall. The two teams will be in action again tomorrow at Warren Steller Field with game time set for 1:00 p.m.
