Bowling Green, Ohio - Ball State broke open a one-run contest with five runs in the top of the ninth inning and went on to defeat Bowling Green, 7-1, at Warren Steller Field on Sunday. The Falcons took two of three from the Cardinals on the weekend.
After junior Jeff Warnock hit his first homer of the season, and just his second career round-tripper in the bottom of the eighth inning, BGSU's deficit was cut to 2-1 heading into the final frame.
However, the Cardinals pounded out six singles, including four-straight, to plate five runs in the top-half of the ninth inning for a 7-1 lead. BGSU used three different pitchers in the inning before closer Neil Schmitz finally put an end to the scoring by recording the final two outs.
BGSU's Burke Badenhop (1-1) pitched 5.1 innings and suffered the loss, despite allowing no walks and just one earned run with two strikeouts. The right-hander was saved in the second inning, though, after Brad Miller and Kiel Holman led off with singles. The third batter, Lucas Fry, lined out to first baseman Andy Hudak, who promptly stepped on first base and threw to Eric Lawson at second base to pull off the inning-ending, triple play.
BSU struck in the top of the sixth inning with two runs off of three hits and one Falcon error for a 2-0 lead. The game stayed that way until Warnock's home run over the right-field fence brought BGSU to within one run. Warnock and Lawson each finished with multiple hits for the Falcons (2-for-3).
BSU's Andrew Anderson (3-1) pitched eight innings, allowing one run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts for the victory.
BGSU falls to 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference while the Cardinals improve to 10-10 overall and 1-2 in the MAC.
The Falcons return to action this Tuesday, March 30, when they travel to Detroit-Mercy (2 p.m.) before hosting Tiffin at Steller Field on Wednesday, March 31 (2 p.m.)
