Kalamazoo, Mich. - A short-handed Bowling Green squad ended its regular-season on a high note by breaking an eight-game winless streak vs. Western Michigan with a 6-4 victory in Kalamazoo, Mich. The six goals matched a season-high by the Falcons.
The Falcons overcame two one-goal deficits and three ties to improve to 11-16-9 overall, and 9-13-6 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Bowling Green began the game without the services of junior goalie Jordan Sigalet (illness) and freshman defenseman Jonathan Sigalet (injury). Jordan Sigalet had started all 35 games for BGSU this season in net and is the national leader in saves (1,063) and minutes played (2,092:54).
As a result, sophomore Bob Frazee was making his first career start and appearing in just his second career game overall at goalie. He had played in just 48:49 minutes of action on Jan. 31 vs. #15 Ohio State after an injury forced Sigalet out of that game.
WMU senior captain Dana Lattery struck first with a shot from the top of the right circle that deflected off a defenseman and past BGSU goalie Bob Frazee for a 1-0 lead at 3:05 of the first period. The Falcons came right back, though, when Mike Falk took a pass from D'Arcy McConvey from behind the net and fired a wrister past goalie Scott Foster to knot the game, 1-1, at 6:31 of the first period. Jon Sitko also picked up an assist, while McConvey's helper gave him his 100-career point as a Falcon (30g, 70a).
Bronco defenseman Mike Jarmuth regained the lead with a power-play goal at 11:25 of the first period, but it was short-lived as Ryan Minnabarriet scored at 12:52 to tie the game, 2-2. Both teams ended the first period with 11 shots on goal.
The track meet on ice continued in the second period with WMU's Pat Dwyer scoring at 1:16 and BGSU's Mark Wires scoring at 2:06 with assists from Falk and Don Morrison. The Falcons then took their first lead of the game, 4-3, when Bryan Dobek scored his third career goal at 5:44 of the second period with a laser slapshot from the left circle. Kevin Bieksa assisted.
It was WMU's turn to tie the game with a Lucas Drake short-handed goal at 8:12 of the second period, 4-4. Then McConvey fired a slapshot that went top-shelf on Foster to give the Falcons a 5-4 advantage at 16:30 of the second period. Kevin Bieksa and Taylor Christie assisted.
Brett Pilkington scored the game's insurance goal at 2:06 of the third period with assists from Ryan Barnett and Jeremy Bronson.
Frazee recorded his first career victory by collecting 34 saves. WMU's Scott Foster took the loss and had 26 saves. BGSU was 0-for-4 on the power play while WMU was 1-for-4.
