BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Stefanie Wenzel is the Bowling Green State University Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Wenzel, a senior on the BGSU women's basketball team, helped the Falcons to a pair of road wins last week, and earned a prestigious honor.
Wenzel, a native of Sussex, Wis. (Hartland Arrowhead H.S.), scored a game-high 21 points in the Falcons' 77-67 win at Marshall (Feb. 25). She tied her career best with five successful three-point field goals in that win, going 5-for-7 from long distance.
Then, on Sunday, she had 11 points as the Falcons came back from a double-digit deficit for an 84-79 win at Ball State in overtime.
Wenzel, who had a team-high 19 points as BG ended the regular season with a win over arch-rival Toledo, now has a career total of 1,052 points, ranking her 16th all-time at BGSU.
Wenzel, named to the Academic All-District Team on Feb. 19, followed the successful end to the regular season by becoming just the third player in school history named to the Academic All-America First Team yesterday (March 4).
On the court, she leads the Falcons with 15.1 points per game, and has scored in double figures in 24 of BGSU's 27 contests, including each of the last 10.
In the classroom, Wenzel, an integrated language arts major, maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.97.
The Falcons, the most improved team in the Mid-American Conference, ended the regular season with an overall record of 18-9. BG finished MAC play with an 11-5 record, a complete reversal of last year's 5-11 league mark. BGSU enjoyed a six-game improvement in MAC games, three more than any other team in the league. The Falcons host Central Michigan in a first-round game in the Kraft MAC Tournament Saturday (March 6). Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena. The winner of the BGSU-CMU game advances to Cleveland's Gund Arena for a Wednesday (March 10) quarterfinal game, set to begin at approximately 3:00 p.m.
