Bowling Green, Ohio - Seniors D'Arcy McConvey (hockey) and Stefanie Wenzel (women's basketball), along with juniors Burke Badenhop (baseball) and Ali Shingler (women's soccer), took home top honors at the 2004 BGSU Scholar-Athlete Honors Banquet Sunday evening (April 18).
McConvey, a native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, was named the 2003-04 Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He holds a 3.91 cumulative grade-point average as a financial economics major. The captain of the hockey team, he played in all 38 games this season, finishing his career having played in 153-straight contests. The 2003-04 campaign marked his second as team captain.
McConvey was named to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year. He finished his career with 102 points (31 goals, 71 assists) in 153 games. McConvey posted his first collegiate hat trick at Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 3, including a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal. In the spring of 2003, he represented BGSU at the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla. He was a third-team pick on the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District IV Team.
Wenzel, a native of Sussex, Wis., was chosen as the 2003-04 Female Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She holds a 3.89 cumulative GPA in integrated language arts. Wenzel, a co-captain in 2003-04, led the Falcons in scoring as BGSU finished with a 21-10 record and advanced all the way to the championship game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. BGSU improved upon last year's win total by nine games, among the top turnarounds in the nation.
Wenzel, an All-MAC Second-Team selection for her play on the court, was named to the Academic All-America First Team, only the fifth women's basketball player in school history to earn Academic All-American honors. Wenzel started all 31 games in 2003-04, tying a school record. She averaged a team-high 14.7 points per game, and is the lone Falcon to average double digits in scoring in each of the last three seasons. Wenzel finished her career with 1,099 points, ranking 14th on the BGSU list. She also finished among the all-time top-five Falcons in three-point field goals made and attempted. This season, Wenzel hit 65 three-pointers, the second-highest total in school history, and ranked 17th in the country in three-point FG percentage (.411).
Both McConvey and Wenzel were honored with the Meserve Scholarship, which is named for long-time BGSU professor and BGSU Faculty Representative for Athletics Dr. Lee Meserve and his wife, Marge.
Badenhop, a native of Perrysburg, Ohio, was named the 2003-04 Falcon Club Male Junior Student-Athlete of the Year. He maintains a 3.91 cumulative GPA as an economics major. Badenhop, a pitcher, entered the Falcons' weekend series vs. Northern Illinois with a 2-2 record and a 4.22 earned-run average on the season. He led the Falcons with a total of 32 innings pitched, spanning nine appearances.
Badenhop entered the NIU series having struck out 14 batters while walking just seven. He tied a career-high by hurling eight innings in a victory at Buffalo on April 11. Badenhop's other victory this season came at Dayton on Feb. 29. For his career, he has made 48 appearances and 14 starts for the Falcons. Badenhop was named to the 2003 MAC Academic Honor Roll.

Shingler, a redshirt sophomore in terms of eligibility, played in 22 of BGSU's 23 matches in the fall, starting 21 in goal. She had a 7-11-3 record and a goals-against average of 2.04, in helping the eighth-seeded Falcons advance all the way to the championship game of the MAC Tournament.
Shingler was named to the Academic All-District Third Team, becoming only the second student-athlete in the history of the women's soccer program to earn such honors. After just one season as the Falcons' starting GK, she has 114 career saves and four complete-match shutouts, ranking second on the BGSU lists in both categories. One of those shutouts came in the MAC Tournament semifinals, as the Falcons tied Central Michigan, 0-0. In the penalty-kick phase of that match, Shingler stopped the initial try by the Chippewas, spurring the Falcons on to the final.
Four Falcon teams also were lauded for their academic achievements. The baseball team received the award for Most Improved GPA for teams with 20 or more participants. The Falcons of head coach Danny Schmitz have a team GPA of 2.93 through the fall, 2003, semester.
