Calgary, Alberta -
Bowling Green State University freshman Jonathan Sigalet was named Thursday, April 1, to Canada's World Championship Under-18 roster for the 2004 IHF World Under-18 Hockey Championship. The championship is taking place from April 8-18 in Minsk, Belarus. Team Canada is the defending IIHF World U-18 Champions winning gold at the 2003 event in Yaroslavl, Russia.
Sigalet, a native of Surrey, British Columbia, recently completed his freshman season for the Falcons, leading all freshmen in points (15) and assists (12) while finishing third overall on the team in assists. He was named CCHA All-Rookie Team Honorable Mention. The defenseman attended the August 2003 Team Canada Under-18 Camp in Calgary, Alberta.
The 22 players have been named by Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). The team is comprised of players under 18 years old (born in 1986) whose teams are not competing in either the CHL, Junior A or collegiate playoffs. Sigalet and Notre Dame's Wes O'Neill are the only two players from NCAA schools.
Dean Chynoweth, from Calgary, Alberta, is the head coach for Team Canada for this Under-18 event. Chynoweth will be joined behind the bench by assistant coaches Clment Jodoin (Montral, QC) and James Boyd (Belleville Bulls, OHL).
Canada's National Under-18 Program consists of two separate teams, assembled twice a year. The National Under-18 Summer Program, which plays in August, and finished fourth at the Junior World Cup in August, 2003, and Canada's Under-18 World Championship Team which Chynoweth will coach in Belarus beginning April 8.
The players met in Montreal yesterday prior to departing for Belarus and the World Championship on April 3rd.
