Falcons Take Third Game Of KSU Series
April 25, 2004 | Baseball
Bowling Green fought back from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Kent State on Sunday afternoon at Gene Michael Field, 7-6. The Falcons pounded out 16 hits in the victory to take two-of-three from the Flashes on theweekend.
The big hit came in the fifth inning when sophomore Nolan Reimold rocketed a 2-0 pitch over the left-field wall. His three-run blast, David Barkholz and Andy Hudak were on second and third base, knotted the game at 5-5 and gave the Falcons momentum. It was his team-leading ninth home run of the season.
The two teams each scored a run in the sixth inning before the Falcons plated the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. Again it was Reimold delivering, this time scoring Barkholz from second base with a double to right field. Freshman Alan Brech (1-0) allowed just one run over three innings of relief to pick up his first career victory while senior Neil Schmitz picked up his seventh save, retiring the side in the ninth inning. Schmitz' seven saves is a new single-season high for the St. Henry native.
KSU took an early lead with four runs in the second inning thanks to five hits, including two doubles, off of BGSU starter Burke Badenhop. The Falcons cut the lead in half with two runs in the top of the third inning. Back-to-back doubles by freshman Eric Lawson and Barkholz led off the inning and Hudak brought Lawson home with a sacrifice fly for the first Falcon run. Then Barkholz moved to third base via a wild pitch by KSU hurler Marco DiMichelle and scored on an error by the second baseman when Reimold hit a shot to him.
Adam Crowder's solo home run to start the bottom of the fourth inning gave KSU a 5-2 lead before Reimold's three-run blast in the sixth inning made it a whole new ball game.
Kent State left runners in scoring position to end seven of the nine innings, including three times with a runner on third base. Overall, KSU stranded 10 while BGSU left 11 runners on base.
BGSU's one-through-three hitters each recorded three hits each, including Lawson (3-for-5), Barkholz (3-for-5), and Hudak (3-for-4). Reimold, Josh Stewart and Jeff Warnock each had two hits apiece.
BGSU improves to 21-11 overall and 8-7 in the MAC while KSU falls to 20-21 overall and 7-8 in the MAC. The Falcons begin a week off from MAC competition when they entertain Defiance on Tuesday, April 27 (3 p.m.) and then travel to Ohio State on Wednesday, April 28 (6:35 p.m.). BGSU plays two doubleheaders at IPFW next weekend (May 1-2).
