Bowling Green, Ohio - Miami plated seven unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning and went on to post a 14-13 victory over Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon at Warren Steller Field. The Falcons still captured the series from the Redhawks, two games to one.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Jason Brown reached base on a throwing error by third baseman Tyler Wasserman. The errant throw went down the right-field fence and allowed two runners to score and began the Miami rally. Two RBI-singles and a three-run home run by Sam Sellery later, and the visiting Redhawks had a 13-8 lead over BGSU.
The Falcons began its comeback in the bottom of the seventh with three runs to cut the deficit to 13-11. Steve Raszka and Wasserman led off with back-to-back singles, and a fielding error by the leftfielder on Wasserman's single allowed Raszka to score. Bobby Majer then grounded out to the shortstop, plating Wasserman, and Nolan Reimold hit an infield single to score Eric Lawson.
Miami built its lead back up to 14-11 with a run in the top of the eighth, but BGSU fought back in the bottom of the ninth. Wasserman led off with a double before Majer struck out and Lawson grounded out. But, Warnock singled home Wasserman and then stole second base. Josh Stewart then singled home Warnock to make it a one-run contest, 14-13. Reimold came to the plate as the game-winning run and hit a pitch to deep right field, but it was caught by Ryan Edington for the final out of the game.
BGSU pounded out 20 hits and scored runs in six of the nine innings. Seventeen of the 20 hits by BGSU were singles with a double coming from David Barkholz and Wasserman, and a triple by Stewart. The 20 hits were one off the Falcons' season-high of 21 vs. Northern Illinois. Seven different Falcons had multiple hits and four had three hits apiece.
Stewart was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBIs while Lawson (3-for-6), Raszka (3-for-5), and Wasserman (3-for-5) each had three hits.
Miami used five different pitchers with Brad Bachman (2-1) eventually picking up the victory and Chad Reineke earning his fourth save of the year. Tyler Johnson (4-3) suffered the loss for the Falcons with four different hurlers going to the mound for BGSU.
BGSU drops to 25-14 overall and 10-8 in the Mid-American Conference. Miami improves to 28-16 overall and 10-6 in the league.
Despite taking two-of-three from Miami, BGSU still sits in fifth place in the West Division of the MAC. The Falcons are one game back of both Northern Illinois (11-7) and Eastern Michigan (11-7).
The Falcons have six MAC games left, including an away three-game series at Toledo next weekend (May 14-16) and a home three-game series against Western Michigan (May 21-23).
